The Hobbit, with a stonking £44.9m to date, is the only 2012 release to achieve four consecutive weeks at the top spot – not even Skyfall managed that, although it did chalk up four non-consecutive appearances in pole position. The last film to occupy the top spot for four straight frames was The Inbetweeners Movie, back in August/September 2011. An Unexpected Journey is now one of the biggest hits of all time at the UK box office, and clearly has plenty of life in it yet.

Sunday (1/20/13) Update: WB reports that The Hobbit made $13.2 million overseas from more than 7,400 screens in 63 markets, pushing its overseas total to $632.2 million. The fantasy flick's global total is now $919.6 million.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to reach box office takings of a billion dollars!

It will become the fifteenth film to do so and be in the company of Titanic, which was the first film to cross the billion-dollar mark, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Dark Knight and Avatar. Nowadays, although it is less of an event to top a billion dollars, with The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Skyfall all doing this in 2012, it is still a significant achievement and the sign of a successful film that is a must-see worldwide.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hit $921 million on Monday, with a $288.7/632.2 million US/international split. With several more weeks of play plus a February 22 opening in China, its final territory, The Hobbit should be crossing the billion-dollar threshold by March reports Variety. Outside of the US, the largest box offices for the film are $80.2 million in Germany and $78.2 million in the UK.


Dass Deutschland so ein großer Markt ist, heißt hoffentlich auch, dass sie hier etwas mehr" publicity in person" machen werden !

D.h. man müsste mit dem Schilderbasteln für den Roten Teppich nächsten Dezember langsam anfangen???

Die Premiere in Japan hat jedenfalls nix gebracht, Japan ist so ziemlich das einzige Land in dem der Hobbit wirklich gefloppt hat. Warum dann nicht eine Premiere in einem Land mit treuem Publikum. Ich hoffe ja, sie schaffen die Milliarde bevor der Film in China anläuft.
