■ THE Oscar-nominated French-American actress, 48, talks bad teachers, anxieties with Ethan Hawke and the memories she’s better off forgetting
What do you like about Carine, your character in The Bachelors?
She is very nice and giving and full of empathy. I just wanted to play a character that has empathy for others. I haven’t played that as much as anything else. What happens when you reach your mid-forties? You only get offered evil people! Carine really wants to help. I’m always amazed when people are kind and although there’s a few in this world that still are, you don’t meet them often.
Is Carine the teacher we’d all want at school?
Yes, she cares for the children. Teaching’s a little bit like being a director! The emotional managing of others! You have to see every child and realise what they need. I have an aunt who is a teacher and she does it brilliantly but I’ve had terrible teachers. Now I’m a parent, I realise the importance of good teachers.
Do you worry about how your son Leo is doing at school?
Yeah. A bad teacher can really block a child completely for years. When my son was very young, we had one not great teacher and it affected him for a couple of years in his learning process. Just because she was not caring, not loving. But she was like that with everyone, it turned out! She was terrible! I think she was just there to damage people. It’s amazing the damage a teacher can do — or the [positive things], like opening a child to arts or science. It will shape their life forever.
Your parents are actors. Did they encourage you in the arts?
They were very good — they put me in music school and writing school. In the 1970s in particular there were a lot of cultural things to explore. They wanted me to express myself through the arts. I played clarinet, piano… they would send me on music camp in the summertime, where all you do is music for two months.
There’s a great awkward date proposition in the film. Ever been through that yourself?
Er… I don’t know! I don’t remember anything of my life! In general I don’t even have memories. Someone asks me for a funny moment on set and I can’t remember a single thing! I keep moving forward. I always have funny situations. It’s endless. I feel I’m in Curb Your Enthusiasm 24/7. Embarrassing moments, messed-up moments. It’s non-stop. I can’t even remember them. It’s better I block them out!
You’re about to start work on My Zoe, your sixth film as writer-director. Is that where your heart lies?
Even as a very young child I was writing stories so writing is who I am at the core and directing is obviously something I love doing. It’s the only time when I’m not neurotic! I feel on the set as a director like it was always meant to be that way. It’s strange. I love acting, it’s just that I’ve done it for many years. Good parts for women in their forties don’t come around that much.
Are you very anxious as an actor?
There’s not one actor acting that doesn’t go through anxiety. It’s very simple… when we did the Before series, Ethan [Hawke] and I, when we’re in the writing period we sleep, we eat, we’re calm, we have no anxiety. And then we go to the acting period and we start having anxiety, we don’t sleep, we don’t eat. Or in my case, when I have anxiety I eat too much! Ethan stops eating!
Is it harder for a woman to be a director?
It is harder for women. There’s no way it is not. The same year 2 Days In Paris came out, another indie film came out that made half the money and the people that did it went on doing everything they wanted. All doors were open. Me, there was not even an offer! The door didn’t open because there was no door! It was funny. I have to have a sense of humour about it as otherwise I’d give up. As a woman, I stand alone. I don’t have anyone supporting me, a director, producer, friend or boyfriend that is supporting me or pushing me or introducing me to people. I’m alone.
You’re based in Los Angeles. Do you like living in the States?
Everything has been different since November 2016 [and Trump’s election]. I think America is just a different place right now. A lot of unhappiness, a lot of stress.
At least Trump can be voted out at the next election, right?
If we can, if we’re allowed to! I’m being overly dramatic… I’m sure he’s not going to be able to completely wreck the constitution! Actually France is the least of the worst right now! I didn’t think I’d say that but I do like Emmanuel Macron. He’s not destructive. He’s constructive.
