Richard Armitage, Indira Varma Cast in Netflix Adaptation of Erotic Thriller ‘Damage’
Also starring Charlie Murphy and Rish Shah, the limited series is based on Josephine Hart's novella, which was adapted into the BAFTA-winning 1992 film starring Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche and Miranda Richardson.
Netflix has added a new erotic thriller to its growing slate of U.K. originals.

Damage — a contemporary three-part adaptation of the 1991 novella from late author Josephine Hart — is described as a “thrilling and seductive limited series about erotic obsession and forbidden desire.” The story centers around a dangerous love triangle that emerges when the enigmatic Anna Barton embarks on a passionate affair with her fiancé’s father, William. While Anna fights to sustain both relationships, William is drawn into an obsessive spiral. But, how long can they keep their secret hidden before someone gets hurt?
The cast includes Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Stay Close, The Stranger) as William; Charlie Murphy (Halo, Peaky Blinders) as Anna; Indira Varma (This Way Up, Obi Wan Kenobi) as William’s wife Ingrid; Rish Shah (Ms. Marvel, Strangers) as Anna’s fiancé Martyn and Pippa Bennett-Warner (Chloe, Gangs of London) as Peggy.

Morgan Lloyd-Malcolm and Benji Walters are writing, with Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa (Good Vibrations, Ordinary Love) directing. The series is produced by Gina Carter. Moonage’s Matthew Read and Frith Triplady, and Gaumont’s Alison Jackson are executive producers.

Damage has already been adapted for the big screen. Landing just a year after the novella was first published, 1992 feature Damage from director Louis Malle starred Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Rupert Graves and Ian Bannen. The film earned $31 million globally, with Richardson winning the BAFTA for best supporting actress, and landing both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Binoche was nominated for best actress at the Cesar Awards.

The Hobbit star Richard Armitage and Peaky Blinders’ Charlie Murphy are leading a three-part Netflix UK erotic thriller about obsession and desire from Gaumont and Moonage Pictures.

Unveiled at a London event this evening by Netflix VP Scripted Content Anne Mensah, Damage also stars Obi Wan Kenobi’s Indira Varma, Strangers’ Rish Shah and Chloe’s Pippa Bennett-Warner.

Adapted from Josephine Hart’s novella, the three-parter centers on a dangerous love triangle that emerges when the enigmatic Anna Barton (Murphy) embarks on a passionate affair with her fiance’s father William (Armitage). Whilst Anna fights to sustain both relationships, William is drawn into an obsessive spiral.

The commission is Moonage’s second from Netflix in the past few weeks after Deadline revealed the streamer had commissioned Bodies, an adaptation of Si Spencer’s graphic novel.

Netflix is commissioning more shows from the UK and held a swanky do in Central London this evening with which to showcase upcoming content.

Richard Armitage is set to star in “Damage,” a new Netflix series from Gaumont U.K. and Moonage.

Armitage (“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”) will play William, a politician who embarks on a passionate affair with his soon-to-be daughter in law, Anna (played by “Peaky Blinders” star Charlie Murphy.)

Anna is already engaged to William’s son Martyn, played by “Miss Marvel’s” Rish Shah. She fights to keep both relationships alive – one with Martyn and one with William – but it is inevitable that the truth will emerge and someone is going to get hurt.

In the meantime, William finds himself drawn into an obsessive spiral, unbeknown to his wife Ingrid (played by “Obi Wan Kenobi’s” Indira Varma.)

Pippa Bennett-Warner (“Gangs of London”) is also set to join the cast as Peggy.

“Damage” is based on Josephine Hart’s 1990s political novella about “erotic obsession and forbidden desire.”

The screenplay is by Morgan Lloyd-Malcolm (“The Interrogation of Leo and Lisa”) and journalist turned scribe Benji Walters with Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa (“Good Vibrations,” “Ordinary Love”) directing.

Gina Carter will produce the series while Moonage’s Matthew Read and Frith Triplady, and Gaumont’s Alison Jackson are set to executive produce.

Boosting its output of dramas, Netflix has opted to produce an adaptation/remake of Damage, a Josephine Hart novel that was last adapted in 1992 as a movie, which originally adapted it. The Netflix version, however, will be a limited series and is described as an “erotic thriller about obsession and desire”.

The episodes of Damage will be directed by the directors duo Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa (Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations). The scripts for Damage were written by Morgan Lloyd-Malcolm and Benji Walters.
