Richard Armitage and the glottalized “t”

So, did anyone else notice that Richard Armitage was often replacing the double “t” (as in “little”) with a glottal stop in the Anglophile Channel interview? He was swallowing his “t” as much or more as he ever has in interviews. This tendency (and its opposite, the refusal to commit the American alveolar flap) is something I’ve been tremendously interested in before. The refusal to do an alveolar flap has really been of the most attractive features of his speech for me. Well, it does suggest an active tongue.

I’d been turning this over in my mind because one question I’ve had for a while is whether Armitage’s speech would become more Americanized after living in the United States. I listened to those interviews from a few weeks ago, and thought, huh, he’s losing his RP but he doesn’t sound much like he’s getting more American at all except when he’s making fun of U.S. speech. I was wondering if he was reverting to his childhood speech in the absence of hearing much RP. It’s happened to other UK actors, including Armitage’s idol, Gary Oldman.

Perry found a recording of Bernard Hare speaking. Notice what Hare does with the intervocalic “t” (“t” between vowels) and the “t” in Auslaut (final consonant “t”). Now compare that to Armitage’s speech patterns in the Anglophile Channel interview and all of the dropped “t” consonants you notice. I think we know how he’s been spending his time now.

Wenn ich an die Sozialarbeiter denke, mit denen ich über die Schule Kontakt habe- ob Richard da eventuell langes Haar haben wird ( Pferdeschwanz?). Ich weiß, es ist ein Klischee, aber ich kenne da wirklich einige, und die meisten haben tatsächlich lange Haare.
Oder arbeiten sie daran, dass er optisch dem tatsächlichen Rollenvorbild entspricht? Blond, mit Brille ?

Und in meinen Gedanken könnte er auch ein wenig wie der gerade aus der Haft entlassene Lucas aussehen, oder JP als Security-Mitarbeiter. Leicht verlottert eben .
