Peter Jackson:

“It’s strange, because in real life he’s so quiet, and he’s very unassuming and shy, and yet you put him in those boots and that coat and give him a sword, and he immediately assumes an incredible authority,” said Jackson. “He always walked like Thorin on set, and when he’s Richard, he walks in a completely different way.”

... working with Richard a lot over the last couples of years and being with him recently for the reshoots, he's just such a hero. He is so majestic and he's so graceful and brilliant and as a character he was incredibly inspirational as well as the person.... He's a hard act to follow.

“Richard is real and honourable and I was totally in awe when Richard did his first speech in Bag End, I think we were all moved in a really truthful way.”

Philippa Boyens (Drehbuchautorin des Hobbit):

Richard is an incredible actor. Every day he gives you something new. You can write a line, and he can transform it and take it far beyond what you thought it was going to be. He worked really hard to get to the heart of his character, to understand what motivates Thorin and how he feels. I think he achieves it beautifully.

One of the moments that stands out for me, and one of the choices he made, was when Thorin finally enters The Lonely Mountain—the way he played it was so understated. It was so emotional. It should be this moment of huge triumph, and instead it is this moment of quiet emotion: ‘I’m home, and I remember.’ All the things that he remembers come flooding back to him. It’s so simple. There’s a beautiful simplicity to what he did in that moment.

I think that’s part of his power as an actor. He’s a very powerful actor. He’s physically very powerful. He plays a great warrior. He has that great Northern English spirit in him, so he can really easily reach for that stuff. But he can do the other stuff as well. He’s got a fantastic range. He’s actually also incredibly funny and can do comedy as well, although he doesn’t get much chance to do so playing this character. And I have to say, as nice as he seems, he’s genuinely that nice of a guy.

Dean O' Gorman, Jed Brophy, Mark Hadlow ( Kollegen vom Hobbit-Dreh)

Video von der Middle Earth Expo

Q: And what was working [with Richard Armitage like]?

Audience: (enthusiastic cheering)

Dean O’Gorman: We’re all a bit like that around Richard. I’m like, “Oh, my God. So dreamy.”

Jed Brophy: (fans self) It was quite hard work.

Dean: ”Armitage is something else.” […] Like I said, I arrived a bit later, so I went down to audition, and I had the audition with Aidan, and then Philippa was showing me around the set. And she (inaudible) […] ”Richard’s in,” and I was like “Okay.” And he was doing vocal warm-ups in his trailer. And he was just so lovely to me from day one. And Richard really, he really wanted the relationship between Fili, Kili, and Thorin to be, you know, as genuine as possible, so he would really do his best to make us feel comf-, feel sort of comforted. Especially me in my first week, ‘cause I was, you know, extremely nervous. And he’s just a really lovely individual, isn’t he?

Jed: I’d follow him into Erebor. He’s a king of men.

Mark Hadlow: I guess if you were, you know, a whole lot of Dwarves, and you, whatever you are, he is honestly the leader, which is what you just said. I mean he was…you would follow him, honestly. Even Richard Armitage as Richard Armitage, without the Dwarf costume. You would follow Richard Armitage.

Jed Brophy (Nori im Hobbit):

So, now a new game ! 13 dwarves, 13 questions, you have to answer fastly and honestly.

[...]

12) The most athletic ?

The most Athletic would be Graham McTavish. Yeah, he’s really really fit. It should be between him and Richard Armitage for the most athletic. Those two really did step up. That was pretty amazing. They do their all stunts. weren’t doubled by their stunties very often at all.

[...]

Another game now, but about you this time. 10 questions, you still have to answer honestly and quickly!

[...]

2) Your favourite actor ?

Richard Armitage. And I say that because I really admire his work before this, but I also watching him on this project. I just fell on love with him as an actor. I think he is one of the best actors I’ve worked with.

Exclusive Interview : Middle Earth News:

AC: Richard Armitage.

Jed Brophy: Oh, yeah. He’s just the most generous guy on the planet. He really is. He’s not just the leader of men on screen, he’s a leader of men off screen. We would have followed him anywhere. He just has that way about him, where he encourages you to do your best. Yeah. Yeah, I trained with him in the gym a lot. He’s probably the strongest person I’ve ever trained with, just in terms of his mental… He will push himself above and beyond, and he did that every day on set as well. So, yeah, he’s… Most people would know that about anyway, but he is just one of those incredibly generous people.
