Trailer:

Sundance Horror Hit 'The Lodge' Trailer Lands Online

By Patrick Cavanaugh - April 18, 2019 10:36 pm

UPDATE: Trailer removed per studio’s request. Original story reads below:

The Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah is the first major film festival of the year, setting the stage for the biggest breakout movies of the year. The festivities are known for highlighting arthouse fare, though recent years have seen a stronger embrace of genre films, as the changing landscape of the horror world has blurred the lines between traditional terrifying tales and compelling drama. At this year's festival, one of the biggest genre films was The Lodge, earning massive buzz for being a tense thriller. In previous years, films like Hereditary and Get Out have become the standout genre films at the festival, with The Lodge potentially becoming a breakout hit. The film's trailer has made its way online, which you can check out above.

UPDATE: The trailer has been removed at the studio's request.

Rotten Tomatoes describes the film, "In this psychologically chilling slow burn, a young woman (Riley Keough) and her reticent new stepchildren find themselves isolated in the family's remote winter cabin, locked away to dredge up the mysteries of her dark past and the losses that seem to haunt them all."

With 21 reviews tallied, the aggregator site calculates that 81% of them are positive.

Over at The AV Club, A.A. Dowd explains, "[Directors] Fiala and Franz know how to draw out the unease through environment, in this case creating a sleepless atmosphere through the low light flowing into their snowbound setting."

At Collider, Perri Nemiroff notes, "With the chilly setting, how the camera moves through the home, and how inner demons threaten to consume a family, it's reminiscent of The Shining. It's a relentless, mind-bending nightmare in which the threat of demons from one's past are always lurking."

Directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala previously collaborated in 2015 for the horror film Goodnight Mommy, which went on to become one of the biggest genre hits of the year. Rotten Tomatoes compiled 85% positive reviews for that film, describing, "Dark, violent, and drenched in dread, Goodnight Mommy is perfect for extreme horror enthusiasts -- or filmgoers who prefer to watch between splayed fingers."

The Lodge is set to hit theaters later this year.

This trailer for Sundance horror hit The Lodge plays out a bit like The Shining in miniature

William Hughes

Yesterday 5:15pmFiled to: Coming Distractions

Here’s a nice little dose of later-afternoon nastiness for all you horror movie fans out there: The new trailer for Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s upcoming release The Lodge, about a young woman named Grace (Riley Keough), whose trip to a remote cabin with her boyfriend (Richard Armitage) and his kids goes about as poorly as one might expect, in messily psychological ways. All seems fine (tense, but fine), until Armitage leaves for a few days, and the remaining trio wake up one morning to find the power out, the food gone, and all their warm clothing nowhere to be seen. It doesn’t help that Grace has apparently been sleepwalking in a decidedly creepy way, making this whole thing feel like it’s treading in the icy footsteps of The Shining—albeit with a much smaller piece of real estate to to work with.

Or possibly The Turn Of The Screw— because it’s not at all clear whether Grace is the one cracking here, or whether her young charges (Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh) are giving her a couple of helpful little pushes along the way. In any case, The Lodge was one of the better received genre films to come out of this year’s Sundance—to say nothing of the fact that Franz and Fiala’s previous domestic horror effort, Goodnight Mommy, was a nastily effective bit of familial terror in its own right—so we’re guardedly optimistic about how this chilly little detour might turn out.

UPDATE: We just got a notice from the film’s P.R. team, informing us that the (formerly) above video wasn’t actually the film’s official trailer, and asking us to remove it. We regret the error.

‘The Lodge’ Trailer Advises You to Not Get Snowed-In With Riley Keough

Posted on Thursday, April 18th, 2019 by Chris Evangelista

The Lodge was one of the best films I saw at Sundance this year – a chilly, slow-burning nightmare that’s bound to give horror fans a jolt. What makes this creeper so effective is how unpredictable it is, which means you might want to go into The Lodge with as little info as possible. That said, the first trailer for the film does an excellent job being vague, while still selling the dread-inducing atmosphere on display. Watch The Lodge trailer below.

Horror films that play at festivals often end up saddled with praise that borders on hyperbole, and The Lodge is no different. In fact, there’s a quote from my review in this trailer in which I call it “the next great horror film.” Does that sound a bit much? Maybe – but I meant it earnestly. This movie really is that good. It’s a chilling, upsetting film that unfolds mostly in one location, and never lets up. Almost from the first frame, The Lodge unfolds in a manner tailor-made to quicken your pulse and jangle your nerves. As I wrote in my review:

It seems like every year, we get at least one film heralded as “the next great horror movie.” Sometimes, that assessment is overblown. But sometimes, it’s spot-on. This year’s next great horror film is The Lodge, and I am entirely confident in that assessment. It’s going to be nearly impossible for any other fright flick this year to top the atmospheric dread and abject terror on display here. An icy cold mix of The Shining and religious mania run wild, The Lodge opens with a bang, and never lets up. Take it from someone who doesn’t scare easy: The Lodge is scary as hell.

I don’t want to tell you too much about The Lodge, because the less you know, the better off you’ll be. Here’s the gist of it: Riley Keough plays a young woman on the verge of marrying a man who has two kids from a previous marriage. Keough’s character desperately tries to make the kids like her, but these children aren’t having it. They resent her, and do everything they can to push her away. Things go from bad to worse when Keough and the two kids get trapped in a cabin during a blizzard. What happens next? Well…you’ll have to see for yourself.

The Lodge doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’re bound to learn it soon, since there’s now a trailer.
