2019 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: #51. Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala’s The Lodge

By
Eric Lavallée
Published on November 22, 2018

They broke out big when Venice, TIFF and Sitges handed them invites for their 2014 horror film Goodnight Mommy (read review) and Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s part in The Field Guide to Evil was a buffer in between features. A fairly secretive first English-language type of project, The Lodge went into production this past January with the likes of Richard Armitage, Katelyn Wells, and Riley Keough.

Rooftop Films 2019

Gist: Written by Franz, Fiala, Sergio Casci, this is about young woman and her new stepchildren who are menaced by a terrifying supernatural force while spending Christmas in their remote cabin.

Production Co./Producers: Hammer Films’ Simon Oakes and Marc Schipper (The Quiet Ones).

Prediction: Midnight section. SXSW will want to program this one as well.

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available. WME Global/FilmNation (domestic). FilmNation (international).

Richards Rolle klingt hier noch kleiner als in anderen Artikeln. :sigh2:

About:
Devoted to their devastated mother, siblings Aidan and Mia resent Grace, the younger woman their newly separated father plans to marry. They flatly reject Grace’s attempts to bond, and they dig up dirt on her tragic past—but soon they find themselves trapped with her, snowed in in a remote holiday village after their dad heads back to the city for work. Just as relations begin to thaw, strange and frightening events threaten to unearth psychological demons from Grace’s strictly religious childhood.

An unblinking study of human frailty, The Lodge offers a haunting exploration of the traumatic aftershocks of religious devotion while positing that some evils just don’t die. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala build an overwhelming disquiet from this visceral and stylish film’s very first scene, before nestling their claustrophobic thriller within a disorientingly endless snow-filled landscape. Riley Keough exudes fragility as well-meaning Grace’s every good intention leads her deeper back toward the hell of her own past, while Jaeden Lieberher and Lia McHugh do impressive work as the kids’ practiced defiance turns to fear.

Fiona’s Most Anticipated Films of Sundance 2019
By Tom Sheffield on 28/12/2018

Written by Fiona Underhill

It’s always difficult to predict what the ‘break outs’ of Sundance will be, but of course, excitement can be generated by finding out that your favourite directors or actors have new films coming out. So, here are my most-anticipated features of Sundance 2019.

#1 – The Souvenir (dir. Joanna Hogg)

One of our best British directors, Joanna Hogg made two of my favourite films – Unrelated (2007) and Archipelago (2010) – both starring Tom Hiddleston – and I’m so excited that she has a new film out. The Souvenir stars Tilda Swinton (swoon) and Richard Ayoade (swoon again) and is set to have two parts, following a film student in the 1980s. Sign me all the way up.

#2 – The Nightingale (dir. Jennifer Kent)

Sam Claflin has recently gone from big-budget fantasy franchises to smaller films, many of which were directed by women (The Riot Club, Their Finest, Me Before You) and which have proven his acting chops (Journey’s End, My Cousin Rachel). He is back with a female director again here, The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent, in a film set in the early 19th century Australian outback. It sounds like he’ll be playing against type, in a more villainous role here as well. Cannot wait.

#3 – Blinded by the Light (dir. Gurinder Chadha)

The director of Bhaji on the Beach, Bend it Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice and Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging comes a new film set in the 1980s (again) about a teenager finding his voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen. Featuring a fantastic British cast including Kulvinder Ghir, Sally Phillips, Rob Brydon and Hayley Atwell.

#4 – The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (dir. Chiwetel Ejiofor)

One of my favourite British actors (I’ve seen him on stage as well as in multiple film and TV roles) is now making his feature film debut as a director. I have seen his 2013 short, Columbite Tantalite which shows his potential as a director. Set in Malawi and starring Ejiofor himself, as well as The Cursed Child’s Noma Dumezweni, the film follows a young boy who helps his village build a wind turbine after reading about them in a library book.

#5 – Animals (dir. Sophie Hyde)

After a decade of partying, Laura and Tyler’s friendship is strained by Laura’s new love and her focus on her novel. A snapshot of a modern woman with competing desires, at once a celebration of female friendship and an examination of the choices we make when facing a crossroads. Starring Holliday Grainger (an amazing British actress) and Alia Shawkat.

#6 – Late Night (directed by Nisha Ganatra, written by Mindy Kaling)

Starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling. A legendary late-night talk show host’s world is turned upside down when she hires her only female staff writer. Originally intended to smooth over diversity concerns, her decision has unexpectedly hilarious consequences as the two women separated by culture and generation are united by their love of a biting punchline.

#7 – The Lodge (dir. Veronika Franz; Severin Fiala)

In this psychologically chilling slow burn, a young woman and her reticent new stepchildren find themselves isolated in the family’s remote winter cabin, locked away to dredge up the mysteries of her dark past and the losses that seem to haunt them all. Starring Riley Keough, Alicia Silverstone and Richard Armitage.

#8 – The Sunlit Night (dir. David Wnendt)

Between New York City and the far north of Norway, an American painter and a Russian émigré find each other in the Arctic circle. Together under a sun that never sets, they discover a future and family that they didn’t know they had. Starring Jenny Slate, Zach Galifianakis and Gillian Anderson.

#9 – Velvet Buzzsaw (dir. Dan Gilroy)

This film reunites Dan Gilroy with his Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. A thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton and Tom Sturridge.

#10 – Little Monsters (dir. Abe Forsythe)

Starring Lupita Nyong’o. A film dedicated to all the kindergarten teachers who motivate children to learn, instill them with confidence and stop them from being devoured by zombies.

#11 – Mope (dir. Lucas Heyne)

Two ‘mopes’ – the lowest-level male performers in the porn industry – set their sights on an impossible dream: stardom. Starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, star of two of my favourite TV series of all time; Misfits and Utopia.

#12 – Sweetheart (Director: JD Dillard)

Jenn has washed ashore on a small tropical island and it doesn’t take her long to realize she’s completely alone. She must spend her days not only surviving the elements, but must also fend off the malevolent force that comes out each night. Starring Kiersey Clemons (Hearts Beat Loud) and Emory Cohen (Brooklyn).

Tja, da wünschen wir doch unserem Mann viel Erfolg.

Schön auch, dass Meg aus Robin Hood (Holliday Grainger) vorangekommen ist (Film Nr. 5). Da trifft er zumindest alte Bekannte in Sundance.

Annual Top Films Lists
Top 150 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2019: #48. The Lodge – Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala

By

Nicholas Bell
Published on January 6, 2019

Art-house commodities after their stylish 2014 debut Goodnight Mommy (read review), co-directors Veronika Franz (wife of Ulrich Seidl) and Severin Fiala scored their English language debut with The Lodge, a co-production between the UK’s Hammer Films and FilmNation Entertainment. In a similar vein to their previous film (which is set for its own English remake from Matt Sobel of Take Me to the River), filming took place in early 2018 in Montreal shooting in 35mm with Greek cinematographer Thimios Bakatakis (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) and featuring a cast including Riley Keough, Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), Jaeden Lieberher (It: Chapter One), and Lia McHugh.

Gist: Co-written by the directors and Sergio Casci, Severin and Fiala once more revisit an estranged figure of motherhood as a soon-to-be stepmom finds herself isolated in a cabin with two children. Eventually, events trigger memories of her strictly religious upbringing related to strange and frightening events which begin to take place.

Release Date/Prediction: The Lodge filmed in early 2018 and will be premiering in the Midnight section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans Scoring Veronika Franz’s & Severin Fiala’s ‘The Lodge’
Posted: January 8, 2019 by filmmusicreporter in Film Scoring Assignments

Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans are scoring the upcoming psychological thriller The Lodge. The film is directed by Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala (Goodnight Mommy) and stars Riley Keough, Jaeden Martell, Lia McHugh, Alicia Silverstone, Richard Armitage and Daniel Keough. The movie centers on a young woman and her reticent new stepchildren who find themselves isolated in the family’s remote winter cabin, locked away to dredge up the mysteries of her dark past and the losses that seem to haunt them all. Franz & Fiala also co-wrote the screenplay with Sergio Casci (The Caller). Simon Oakes (The Woman in Black, Let Me In), Aliza James and Aaron Ryder (Arrival, The Prestige, Mud) are producing the project. The Lodge will premiere later this month at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

As reported last year, Bensi & Jurriaans (Boy Erased, The Gift, Enemy) have also scored the Naomi Watts-starring thriller The Wolf Hour, which will also premiere at Sundance. The composers also wrote the music for the upcoming documentary Bedlam. The film is directed by Kenneth Paul Rosenberg and follows a psychiatrist as he makes rounds in ERs, jails, and homeless camps to tell the intimate stories behind one of the greatest social crises of our time. Rosenberg is also producing the project with Peter Miller. Bedlam will premiere in competition at Sundance.

The composers’ other upcoming projects also include new seasons of Netflix’s Ozark, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead and Starz’s American Gods.
