The Old Vic has confirmed that its acclaimed recent revival of Arthur Miller's The Crucible will be broadcast to cinemas on 4 and 7 December 2014.

Directed by Yaël Farber and starring Richard Armitage, the production will be screened in over 350 cinemas across the UK in partnership with DigitalTheatre.com and CinemaLive.

Arthur Miller's play was inspired by the actions of The House Committee on Un-American Activities of the McCarthy era, in front of which the playwright was invited to give evidence. It was most recently seen in London at the Open Air Theatre in 2010, with Patrick O'Kane as Proctor.

Armitage (Robin Hood, Spooks and The Hobbit) plays John Proctor and is joined by Anna Madeley (Earthquakes in London) as Elizabeth Proctor and newcomer Samantha Colley as Abigail Williams. The cast also includes Sarah Niles, Rebecca Saire and Zara White.

The Crucible, which has now finished its run, was the third play in a new season of productions presented in-the-round at The Old Vic. The fourth production is the current Electra starring Kristin Scott-Thomas.

Missed out on a hit? No problem. Following in the footsteps of the National Theatre’s successful NT Live series, the Old Vic’s sold-out production of The Crucible is to be screened in over 350 cinemas across the UK this December.

In this short clip, its leading man Richard Armitage reveals plans for the screenings on Thursday 4 and Sunday 7 December followed by an extract from what cinema audiences can expect.

The Hobbit star moved to a different sort of wizardry when he signed up to star as John Proctor in Arthur Miller’s classic play, which tackles McCarthy era witch hunts in the guise of the Salem witch trials. It paid dividends: in a five-star review of the play for the Telegraph, theatre critic Charles Spencer called it ‘a production of electrifying intensity’.

The screenings are a co-production between DigitalTheatre.com and CinemaLive.

The Old Vic’s production of The Crucible starring Richard Armitage will be screened in cinemas around the UK in December.

Arthur Miller’s play, directed by Yael Farber, has been filmed by Digital Theatre and will be distributed by Cinema Live to more than 350 cinemas across the UK on December 4 and 7.

The screenings mark the first time Digital Theatre, which has previously filmed productions such as Chichester Festival Theatre’s Private Lives starring Toby Stephens and Anna Chancellor, has worked with the Old Vic.

Digital Theatre executive producer Tom Shaw said Digital Theatre continued to “extend the reach of the best of British theatre, building new audiences and giving every viewer a ‘best seat in the house’ experience”.

Cinema Live chief executive Peter Skillman added: “Digital Theatre’s superbly crafted productions ensure that the cinema environment is the best place to see and hear this fantastic play, where Richard Armitage’s performance will surely go down in history as one of London theatre’s best.”

The Crucible ran earlier this year at the Old Vic, with design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting by Tim Lutkin, music and sound by Richard Hammarton and movement by Imogen Knight.

Ich bin ja sehr gespannt, in welchen deutschen Kinos TC gezeigt wird! Sie werden die Inszenierung doch hoffentlich auch in Deutschland ausstrahlen, nicht wahr?

Meinst Du wirklich??? Obwohl das natürlich genial wäre, kann ich mir das nicht so recht vorstellen.

Digital Theatre hat das Stück "Ghosts" gefilmt. Es wurde vor kurzem in Berlin gezeigt. Warum also nicht auch TC?

Ich gestehe, dass ich ja ein bißchen auf Berlin hoffe. Allerdings bin ich im WS ziemlich viel auswärts.
