The Crucible Mini-Review:
http://blueflamingo.eu/music/the-crucible-mini-review/

Theatre is as versatile as life. It can be boring, powerful, sentimental or anything else it wishes to be. But having said that, this is the first time I’ve had a physical reaction as well as an emotional one while watching the actors on stage. ...
The whole cast is superb, with Anna Madeley playing Elizabeth Proctor simultaneously as strong and vulnerable. She blames her husband for the affair, and although she wants to remain with him, she has not yet forgiven him. Adrian Schiller as Reverend John Hale is earnest and compassionate: a man who begins his work in the town believing he is doing good and only later realising the horrendous consequences that the accusations and trials have led to. Although some reviews have mentioned Samantha Colley and her performance as Abigail, I found Natalie Gavin as Mary Warren, the servant girl of the Proctor household who promises to testify against Abigail,
...
In the end however, the experience was truly amazing. As the actors came on stage to take their bows, the audience (including me) stood up to applaud. When the others left the stage with only Richard Armitage staying behind, the crowd went wild. He deserved all the applauds and cheers: it was one of the finest performances he’s given so far in his career.

I saw a preview of The crucible and there were some powerful
performances but the director's self indulgence meant we had to suffer
time wasting mood setting with women walking around in the dark looking
like something from The Trojan Women. As the show was nearly 4hrs long
the director should have just got on with the story. Saying that the
play was very good but didn't quite work in the round as people stood in
positions that blocked the view of the audience. This might be ironed
out by opening night. Richard has good stage presence but I sometimes
felt it was John Thornton glowering and if he continues to raise his
voice so much he will have laryngitis by the end of the run

#TheCrucible was absolutely fantastic @oldvictheatre last night, don't be daunted by the nearly 4hr running time it flies by!
The time flew by. Can't recommend it enough!

Caught it on Thursday night and it was 3 hours 45. The acting was generally very good and the staging tense and gripping, (although I would've though that those sitting at the back of the traditional stage would not have a brilliant view; I felt it was directed for a thrust stage rather than a complete round) but ye gods, it was long. The interval is over two hours in, and if you leave before then, they won't let you back in. Several people around us had evidently had enough and left at the interval.
Overall I very much enjoyed it, but found the length self-indulgent. They could easily cut 15 or 20 minutes by ditching the first ten minutes and some very slow act changes (the Sad Silences of a Cold Marriage at the beginning of Act 2 could also go; we get the general idea). They really need to pace it up before press night otherwise it'll be all the reviews talk about, which would be a shame as there's an excellent production in there.

Richard Armitage in The Crucible
Two of the most touching moments for me were the following:
- Hearing his voice - RA’s voice, right there, not coming from a computer or anything… just coming straight to my ears, not even a microphone involved. And yes, it sounds incredibly good.
- Getting up off my seat and raising my hands in applause as he steps forward alone after the performance. It was a magical moment, applauding RA right there in the theatre. The joy, the pride on my side!…
