CineEurope: Warner Bros. Teases 'Mad Max,' 'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' to Foreign Theater Owners

UPDATED: International distribution president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg also shared snippets of "Interstellar" and the final "Hobbit" film, plus a personal message from Peter Jackson.

BARCELONA – Warner Bros. pumped up the volume and action at CineEurope on Monday evening with never-before-seen footage from a slew of high-profile films from its 2015 slate, including the re-dated Jupiter Ascending starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, and Tom Hardy’s turn as Max in Mad Max: Fury Road.

The studio presentation, led by longtime president of international distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, was split into two parts, with a look at the remainder of this year’s global release slate and the studio's 2015 slate. The latter included a sneak peek at Will Smith starrer Focus, stormy seas and sailors in Ron Howard’s Moby Dick origin story In The Heart of the Sea, and excerpts from Guy Ritchie’s big-screen revamp of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.

Vandenberg brought a taped message from Peter Jackson and some never-seen footage from the third and final Hobbit movie, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which will herald the end of the filmmaker’s 16 years of bringing the work of J.R.R. Tolkien to the big screen. Jackson thanked the exhibition community for being "supportive every step of the way" with his quest from the Lord of the Rings to the Hobbit franchise, describing his relationship with foreign theaters as a partnership. After screening the footage, Vandenberg noted that she and the team are sure the all-star franchise-ender will deliver an "exceptional performance" at the box office in December 2014.

Warner Bros. also put on a lavish opening night dinner reception, complete with screens showing the World Cup soccer game between Germany and Portugal, before screening tornado action film Into the Storm in the auditorium, which was fitted out with an ear-busting Dolby Atmos sound system.

Spy says Peter Jackson has approved the next Hobbit trailer

A little earlier, a birdie landed on our mountain and informed us that Peter Jackson put his final approval on the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies just today.

Our first time source says that the trailer still needs to be rated, but hopefully (cross fingers) this means we’ll see marketing for the final Hobbit film cranking into gear in the near future.

The popular J.R.R Tolkien based saga will conclude with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which is set to hit the big screen on December 17, 2014. The film's long-awaited trailer is about to be released and reports say it is comprised of only four spoken phrases.

Several rumors have been circulating saying that although the film will still be heavily based on J.R.R. Tolkien's book, the character Thorin Oakenshield who dies in the book will remain alive in the movie.

These rumors began to spread based off the popular demand of viewers over the extreme popularity of Thorin Oakenshield. More recently, rumors are leaning toward the hero's death, due to some mention of devastating events in the film.

Actor Richard Armitage provided his insight into the quality of the movie, "If they haven't read the book... I know. Oh it's so good. I can't even begin to tell you - it's so good... The way that's structured - I know we're not supposed to talk about it, but it's... at every level it surpassed my expectation," he recently said in an interview.

In other news, Chris Lee teased the fans about his involvement in the film. He recently revealed through his 2013 Christmas Video, "There's a lot of me in it. A lot that viewers can also expect to see a tremendous amount of fighting, sword play, understanding, sympathy, kindness towards Galadriel, towards Gandalf. I'm not saying anymore because that would give the story away. But it's the third film in which I have the most to do," Lee said.

Fans are hoping that Armitage's views on the film will turn out to be an accurate assessment when they watch it for the first time on December 17.

Thank you all for your responses to my posting about Lorri and Damien’s book. Of course, many of you asked about the Hobbit Trailer. So, yes - there will be a Hobbit Trailer. But like the previous two years, it’s not going to be released until around Oct. The complex VFX work required to produce the battle shots we’re all wanting to see are simply not far enough along yet.

However … yesterday I finished work on a Teaser Trailer and that has just been delivered to Warner Bros. So no doubt this Teaser Trailer will be making it’s way into the world sometime soon…

8) Richard Armitage

The Rings trilogy boosted the careers of many of its cast members. Orlando Bloom arguably became the biggest star, but Viggo Mortensen also became a bonafide leading man. Hugo Weaving built on his breakthrough role in The Matrix and his Rings work to become one of Hollywood's better character actors. Andy Serkis built off his work as Gollum to become Hollywood's premiere digital performer.

Right now, if I had to choose a potential breakout star from the Hobbit cast, there are many options. Aidan Turner broke through on the BBC's Being Human and his role as handsome dwarf Kili could be another big step to stardom akin to Bloom's original turn as Legolas. Martin Freeman is already a bonafide star thanks to the BBC's Sherlock, the Fargo series, and these films. Evangeline Lilly already hit it big on Lost, and continues to line up big movie roles. But don't sleep on Richard Armitage, an Englishman who could become a leading man in his own right after these films are done. His performance as the honorable yet prideful Thorin has been very well crafted. He has shown Thorin's longing for his homeland and how it ever so gradually becomes a lust for power and wealth of his own. The closer he gets to Erebor, the more willing he seems to be to sacrifice some of his ideals. Having read the book, I'm eager to see how Armitage concludes his portrayal of this character in the final film.
