Dem smaug seine1Wie Warner Bros. Deutschland heute verlauten ließ, wurde der Titel des zweiten „Hobbit“-Films, der im Original „The Desolation of Smaug“ heißt, nochmals für Deutschland geändert. Hintergrund war ein offener Brief eines Mitglieds der Deutschen Tolkien Gesellschaft, das nicht namentlich genannt werden wollte:

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Vielen Dank, dass Sie sich die Kritik der DTG vom 21.12.2012 zu Herzen genommen haben. Der in der deutschen Schriftsprache völlig falsche Titel „Die Einöde von Smaug“ wurde für die Kinofassung in „Smaugs Einöde“ geändert. Der Titel ist durchaus naheliegend und wird auch auf Thrors Karte in der Übersetzung von Wolfgang Krege verwendet. Ungeachtet dessen möchte ich Sie jedoch darauf hinweisen, dass Kreges Übersetzung weit entfernt von der Perfektion ist und als Quelle nur bedingt tauglich ist.

Speziell beim „Hobbit“, der ja eine Niederschrift des roten Buches der Westmark darstellt, wäre ein rustikaler, bäuerlicher, ländlicher Sprachstil angebracht. Schließlich sind die Hobbits einfache Gemüter; sie sind nicht mal alle des Schreibens mächtig. Von daher möchte ich Sie bitten, den Titel abermals unter diesen Gesichtspunkten zu ändern. „Dem Smaug seine Einöde“ würde ich als adäquat empfinden.

Nun hat Warner die erneute Kritik zu Herzen genommen und den Titel des zweiten „Hobbit“-Films nochmal geändert. Der neue Titel lautet nun „Dem Smaug seine Einöde“. Der neue Titel wird sowohl auf den im April erscheinenden Filmcovern, als auch im Film selbst zur Geltung kommen. Das lokalisierte Merchandising soll nach und nach auf das neue Logo umgestellt werden (was die Preise für die Erstauflagen mit dem alten Titel vermutlich in die Höhe treiben dürfte).

EXCLUSIVE – The Hobbit: There and Back Again may become The Hobbit: Into the Fire?

A little bird came knocking today, and whispered some intriguing — and slightly baffling — news into our ears. Ringer Spy The Knocking Thrush, who is a reliable source, dropped us a line to let us know that New Line have registered a new title: The Hobbit: Into the Fire. But for what?

A quick reminder of the history of The Hobbit movie titles may be in order!


Back when we thought we were only getting two movies, the titles were to be An Unexpected Journey and There and Back Again.
In July of 2012 the decision was made to make three films, with An Unexpected Journey still as the first title, but unknown titles for the next two films.
Then we heard — from our same reliable source — that New Line had registered two new names — The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. These titles seemed pretty clearly suited to parts two and three of a trilogy — so one might have thought There and Back Again was gone.
By August 2012, however, it seemed that the titles were set as The Desolation of Smaug for part two, with There and Back Again retained for the third and final part. This title for part three seemed to be confirmed in other, later press releases, such as the one confirming the move of the release date from Summer to December 2014, as reported here. The Battle of Five Armies title had come to nothing — and There and Back Again has been used by press, cast, and all when discussing the film which will come out at the end of this year.


Now, we hear that New Line has registered this further title, The Hobbit: Into the Fire. What does this mean? Previiously, The Knocking Thursh told us that – quoting from this post – ’because they must register their eventual title, studios often register multiple titles.’

One could believe that, back in 2012, The Battle of Five Armies was simply a ‘just in case’ extra title; but why would there be a need for such a ‘maybe’ title at this stage?

Could There And Back Again simply have been a holding title for the past 18 months?

Brand is incredibly important to studios (just as it is to most multinationals). It seems to defy logic that New Line (and I guess Warner Bros and MGM) would abandon a name that’s built up a great deal of recognition among keen fans and casual moviegoers to the point where there’s an acronym for it — TABA.

It might be that they believe the title is confusing. After all, the Company is already There (ie: Erebor). But it’s just as logical to interpret the word there as referring to being there as it is to think that it must mean the act of travelling to there. I don’t think it’s really that confusing as a title.

Or maybe it’s a nod to the chapter of The Hobbit Out of the Frying, Into The Fire. We’ve seen dialogue get reapportioned in entirely different contexts (sometimes by different speakers to the novels) in this way before. But I can’t see why they’d abandon There And Back Again — part of the novel’s title — merely to do that.

Once you really think about it, Into The Fire actually seems a better fit for the events that we’ve just witnessed in The Desolation of Smaug, not what we’ll see in the final film. Bilbo and Thorin have already experienced their trial by fire.

Alternatively, maybe New Line is planning some movie tie-in we don’t yet know about, and need to reserve intellectual property rights. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what, if anything, comes of this.

Inside Information...

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the fate of Thorin Oakenshield in the final chapter of The Hobbit trilogy, and Richard Armitage, who plays the tortured hero, recently weighed in on his character's end in The Battle of Five Armies via a Twitter Q&A.

In the interaction conducted by Digital Spy, the actor had some funny observations to make about Thorin's future.

"I don't think he would have had a choice, I think it would have possessed him," he said. "I think he would have shut himself away in the mountain and would have become Sauron, but like a mini Sauron."

In fact, earlier this month, fans even signed an online petition requesting Thorin be kept alive betraying his fate in the book.

Here's the official petition:

"Despite the many fans' love to the familiar main characters such as Bilbo and Gandalf, not less we liked Thorin Oakenshield. For many of us, he means more than might be imagined: for each of us, his fans, he represents something different, attractive in his own way, and this is not just a hysterical fan love. We deeply regret that Professor Tolkien killed Thorin in the book, but do not absolutely want and are not going to challenge the correctness of this action. Instead, we decided to turn to you with a request not to kill him at least in the movie."

The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies will hit theaters on Dec. 18.

Als die Gefährten ihre Heimat vom Drachen Smaug zurückfordern, entfesseln sie unversehens seine zerstörerische Kraft: Der wütende Smaug speit seinen feurigen Zorn auf die wehrlosen Männer, Frauen und Kinder von Seestadt.

Thorin ist besessen von seinem Drang, den zurückeroberten Schatz zu schützen – dafür riskiert er sogar Freundschaft und Ehre, während Bilbo verzweifelt versucht, ihm Vernunft beizubringen. Zur internationalen Besetzung zählen Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt sowie Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving und Orlando Bloom. Weitere Rollen übernehmen (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O’Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt und Aidan Turner.

Das Drehbuch zu „Der Hobbit: Die Schlacht der Fünf Heere“ verfassten Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro nach dem Roman von J.R.R. Tolkien. Der Film wurde von Peter Jackson zusammen mit Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner und Fran Walsh produziert. Als Executive Producers sind Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins und Carolyn Blackwood beteiligt, Philippa Boyens und Eileen Moran co-produzieren.

Zum kreativen Team gehören Kameramann Andrew Lesnie, Produktionsdesigner Dan Hennah, Cutter Jabez Olssen und Komponist Howard Shore. Die Kostüme gestalten Richard Taylor, Bob Buck und Ann Maskrey. Taylor verantwortet außerdem die Entwürfe und Fertigung der Waffen, Rüstungen und speziellen Fabelwesen-Masken, die wieder im preisgekrönten Weta Workshop hergestellt werden. Unter Jacksons Regie wurde „Der Hobbit: Die Schlacht der Fünf Heere“ in 3-D mit 48 Einzelbildern pro Sekunde gedreht und wird dann in ausgewählten Kinos im Format High Frame Rate 3D (HFR 3D) sowie in anderen 2-D-, 3-D-Formaten und in IMAX®-Kinos gezeigt. Produziert wurde der Film in Jacksons eigenem Studio in Miramar/Wellington sowie an Schauplätzen in Neuseeland. Die Endfertigung fand bei Park Road Post Production in Wellington statt.

New Line Cinema und Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures präsentieren eine WingNut Films Produktion: „Der Hobbit: Die Schlacht der Fünf Heere“. Wie schon die ersten beiden Trilogie-Teile „Der Hobbit: Eine unerwartete Reise“ und „Der Hobbit: Smaugs Einöde“ ist auch der Abschlussfilm eine Produktion von New Line Cinema und Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) – New Line managt die Produktion. Der Film kommt am 10. Dezember 2014 in die deutschen Kinos.

Warner Bros. Pictures übernimmt weltweit den Verleih, wobei MGM den Verleih in bestimmten Ländern sowie alle internationalen Fernsehlizenzen verwaltet.

Nun warten wir auf den Trailer, der eigentlich bereits längst vor GODZILLA und EDGE OF TOMORROW in den Kinos laufen sollte, aber noch einmal zurück gezogen wurde, da er sich zu sehr auf Bilbo als Figur fokussierte, nun aber mehr die namensgebende Schlacht der Fünf Heere in den Vordergrund rücken soll.
