Fraud Squad
08/08/2013
Radio Times. Review by: David Butcher
This is what large-scale financial fraud looks like: two men step off a plane at Heathrow expecting to transfer onto a flight to Spain. Instead they’re arrested by City of London Police, who suspect them of conning ordinary investors with a “boiler room” scam and laundering huge sums of money via Canada. We also see a dawn raid on a Croydon house where the kingpin of a huge mortgage scam lives. (“He thinks he’s bombproof,” says one of the cops). In fact, the suspect faints when the police come in, then looks mournful and befuddled, as if it’s all a mistake. It isn’t.
Though it’s hard to make fraud televisual (aerial shots of the City of London feature heavily here), the human stories are bizarre and gripping.
