TRH THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE TO ATTEND THE CINEMA AND TELEVISION BENEVOLENT FUND’S 65th ROYAL FILM PERFORMANCE™ OF SIR PETER JACKSON’S “THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY”
The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund’s Royal Film Performance™ of Academy Award® winner, Sir Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be attended by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the Odeon Leicester Square on Wednesday, 12th December 2012.The Royal Film Performance™ is the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund’s (CTBF) principal fundraising event. All the money raised from the event goes directly to the charity, which supports film and television industry employees and their families in times of hardship. As well as providing financial and practical support, the CTBF assists aspiring young filmmakers through schemes such as The John Brabourne Awards, and runs Glebelands, the industry’s care home in Berkshire.
The Royal Film Performance™ was first attended by King George VI in 1946 and every performance since then has been attended by members of the Royal Family, including HM The Queen on many occasions as Patron of the Fund. This is the first time TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be attending a Royal Film Performance™.
Before the performance, Their Royal Highnesses will meet Trustees and beneficiaries of the charity, the film makers and members of the cast.“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is the first of three films in Peter Jackson’s epic adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece. A production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), the film is being distributed in the UK by Warner Bros Pictures and will be released in 3D and 2D in selected cinemas and IMAX on December 13th, 2012.
Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. Also reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” in “The Hobbit” Trilogy are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The international ensemble cast of the trilogy also includes (in alphabetical order) Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott and Aidan Turner.
The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro. Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be released beginning December 13, 2012, with the second film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” releasing beginning December 13, 2013, and the third film, “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” slated for July 18, 2014.
