As a lover of cinema, Jackson’s film bored me rigid; as a lover of Tolkien, it broke my heart.

In terms of character work, it's mainly 'Bilbo Baggins' and 'Thorin Oakenshield' who get the spotlight. Martin Freeman, perhaps best known for his role as 'Dr. Watson' in the BBC series Sherlock, is perfect as the lead character. Bringing the exact right amount of humour and likeability to 'Bilbo', it's hard to imagine anyone else filling this role so perfectly. A stand out performance. Richard Armitage is also great, making 'Thorin' a complicated and thoroughly compelling presence onscreen.

It is not as stirring as its big-screen predecessor, nor does it triumph over many of the comparisons which will inevitably be made. It is however hugely enjoyable, lighter in tone and fresher in spirit than our last outing in Tolkien’s world. It is worth remembering that it is one part of a larger story. This does not help the disjointed tone and stretched narrative overly, but Jackson brings us back to a world unmistakably his, and it is, at times, some of the best work he has done. A tighter hand (and one less film in the mix) may have helped this first film somewhat but there’s no doubt that the first step taken on our journey with The Hobbit is an enjoyable and visually stunning one.

Richard Armitage gives Thorin extraordinary depth – this is a truly heroic character in whom we can believe as a leader and a potential king, but who is also a haunted, vulnerable being who carries heavy burdens of sadness and self-doubt.

It’s a very good movie, but not a great one. It lacks the stand-out jaw dropping moments from the original films, and feels like it’s saving all the best moments for the later movies. Nonetheless, it’s a film which we're already looking forward to seeing again, and soon. But just not in 48fps. On this evidence, 48fps is a horrible way to shoot and exhibit a film. We can but hope it turns out to be a passing fad. 4/5

It’s nice for actor Richard Armitage (Captain America: The First Avenger, Robin Hood) that Jackson chose to make his Thorin this trilogy’s Aragorn, all noble and lonely and angsty and still-not-king, because Armitage is wonderful in every possible way and I hope this makes him a huge star, because he totally deserves it and I long to see him more on the big screen. But that’s not really a good reason to take a story called The Hobbit that is about a hobbit and make it about Thorin.

No less welcome is Richard Armitage, scarcely known here, although he has throbbed hearts on a regular basis on British TV; he now pulls off the task, deemed impossible by every expert on Middle-Earth, of making a dwarf seductive. To be honest, the dwarves come across as a jumble of Brueghel faces, lit with grins, scrunched by scowls, and fronted by bulbous conks; only Armitage, as Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the pack, earns consistent dramatic attention, and he brings the rumpus of the early scenes to a beautiful halt as he pauses to croon, in a yearning baritone, an anthem of dwarf-desire—“Far over the misty mountains cold.”

To conclude: The Hobbit: AUJ is a more than worthy successor to the LoTR films – and learns from many of their mistakes and avoids many of their disappointments whilst standing true to all their positives. In the end, one of my key metrics for a good film is whether it sucks me in enough for the drama to send shivers up and down my spine… and I’m happy to say that both the sacking of Dale and Thorin’s final showdown managed that big time. The set pieces are bigger and more spectacular than ever, and the film captures both the essence and the detail of the book. What more could you ask for? In IMDB terms, I’d give it 8 out of 10 (with FoTR coming in at 7, TTT at 8, RoTK at 7).
