Berlinale Talents 2017: Courageous encounters with Agnieszka Holland, Ana Lily Amirpour, Andres Veiel, Christo, David OReilly, Gob Squad, Isabel Coixet, João Moreira Salles, Paul Verhoeven, Raoul Peck and other experts


On its 15th anniversary, Berlinale Talents once again offers the public and its 250 Talents a diverse programme of events, and proves that it’s still young enough to keep reinventing itself.

“This year’s theme, ‘Courage: Against All Odds,’ couldn’t feel timelier. While segregation is on the rise elsewhere, we stand in solidarity with those who believe in respect and the diversity of culture. Every year, our audiences, guests and Talents prove with their courage and love of cinema that together we’re stronger and more creative,” comments programme manager Florian Weghorn.

The everyday bravery of today’s film professionals takes centre stage at the 25 public events at HAU Hebbel am Ufer from February 11 to 16, 2017. In addition, Berlinale Talents presents five public screenings of outstanding alumni films from this year’s Berlinale festival programme. All in all, Berlinale Talents can once again boast impressive results in its talent development: 93 films, made with the contributions of 131 alumni, are screening at the Berlinale this year.

Completing the Circle – Alumni Return as Experts and Friends

The constantly growing network of successful alumni also contributes towards the Berlinale Talents programme itself. Alumna Ana Lily Amirpour, who came to international prominence with her debut feature A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, shares her creative process with the audience in a brainstorming session drawing on influences ranging from Bruce Lee to Back to the Future. The Mexican cinematographer Diego Garciá, who participated at Berlinale Talents in 2014, returns as an expert at the Camera Studio after recently shooting with Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Carlos Reygadas and Paul Dano, as well as lensing the visually stunning indie film Boi Neon.

Courage Is a Good Idea – Movers and Shakers of the Summit

Exploring the risks and strategies of the profession, the guests of Berlinale Talents take the audience on a journey through personal, creative and cinematic moments of courage. On the opening panel, the president of the International Jury, Paul Verhoeven, returns to Berlinale Talents to discuss his most recent film, Elle. In “No Longer There: The Art of Disappearance,” artist Christo highlights the role courage plays in creating temporary artworks which are then deliberately allowed to vanish again.

Berlinale Talents amplifies the trends and voices of the film programme in the festival. Taking a break from his two film premieres, Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck visits Berlinale Talents for a talk with the expressive title “Shock of the Real: History as Provocation.” And tracing the impact of past revolutions and revolutionaries on today, the documentary filmmakers Andres Veiel and João Moreira Salles delve into archival material from their two festival films.

In “post-truth” times, cinematic storytellers are faced with the challenge of having to redefine their roles as purveyors of truths – both as critics and as activists – while at the same time maintaining their own attitudes and humour. The summit addresses this by hosting advocates of free-spirited cinema from Europe and beyond, including Polish director Agnieszka Holland. Isabel Coixet presents her new short film, It’s Not That Cold Siberia, a journey to the origins of inspiration, followed by an in-depth conversation on stage. And Sally Potter provides insights into how she transforms the film set into a safe haven in which her actors can allow intimacy and personal truthfulness to unfold freely.

Core Mission: Cultural Exchange

Hosting participants from over 70 countries makes cultural exchange an important element of Berlinale Talents. The panel “Doc Different: Co-Producing Culture” assembles bloggers, curators and filmmakers to discuss how new technologies enable us to rethink joint documentary production as a continuous process of democratic exchange. Against the backdrop of political developments in Turkey, the panel “Between the Lines: Film, Critique” gathers Turkish filmmakers and journalists who explain how independent platforms and films can offer and preserve a space for critical voices. And to promote courageous filmmakers in the Arab world, Berlinale Talents once again hosts the award ceremony of the Film Prize of the Robert Bosch Stiftung for International Cooperation Germany / Arab World.

Together We’re Strong – Brave Collectives

More than ever, the public programme of Berlinale Talents allows audiences to experience new collective forms of collaboration. Production designer Alex McDowell (Minority Report, Fight Club) and a team of interdisciplinary experts engage the audience in an onstage world-building session to visualize the future of cities caught between surveillance and spectacle. Members of the much loved Berlin-based performance art collective Gob Squad take the audience on an even more immersive journey. Their emphasis has always been on free interaction and open narrations with multiple outcomes; at Berlinale Talents they playfully transfer their approach to the current hype surrounding Virtual Reality. And animation „wunderkind“ David OReilly philosophises with Maike Mia Hoehne also about the new roles of the viewer, as exemplified in his new computer game Everything which has its world premiere at Berlinale Shorts.

As part of the „Drama Series Days“ and supported by ARRI and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the case study „On Location: Berlin Station“ provides a multidisciplinary tour of the production processes and digital workflow behind the hit espionage series Berlin Station, which was just recently shot in the German capital. On the subject of film production, three panels during the Producers Day put courageous producers and funders in the spotlight. They take on topics such as gender equality in the field of production, successful relations between co-producers and how to systematically support filmmakers who are willing to take financial and narrative risks.

„Drama Series Days“ 2017: Neuer Standort im Zoo Palast

Die „Drama Series Days“, die gemeinsame Initiative für Serien-Inhalte bei den Industry-Plattformen European Film Market, Berlinale Co-Production Market und Berlinale Talents, gehen in die dritte Runde. Nach dem großen Erfolg der Vorjahre wird das Programm 2017 um einen Tag erweitert und läuft vom 13. bis 15. Februar 2017.

Der neue Ort der Panels und Marktvorführungen, die vom European Film Market angeboten werden, ist der legendäre Zoo Palast. Er wird dieses Jahr zu dem Serien-Treffpunkt der Branche werden. Auch „CoPro Series“, das Pitching, das vom Berlinale Co-Production Market ausgerichtet wird, wird hier stattfinden.

Die „Drama Series Days“ sind eine pulsierende fachspezifische Plattform, die Filmschaffende, Einkäufer*innen, Verkäufer*innen, Produzenten*innen, Redakteur*innen und Finanziers hochwertiger Dramaserien dazu einlädt, sich auszutauschen und neuen Serien-Content zu präsentieren.

„CoPro Series“ schafft einen aktiven Raum für Networking und Austausch zwischen der Film- und der Serienindustrie. Bei der Veranstaltung haben die angemeldeten Teilnehmenden – Produzent*innen und Finanziers aus dem Pool der Berlinale-Co-Production-Market- und der „Drama Series Days“-Fachbesucher*innen – nach dem Pitch Gelegenheit, die Macher*innen der Serien beim Networking-Get-Together kennen zu lernen und sich über die gepitchten Stoffe auszutauschen. In vorab organisierten Einzelmeetings können die Teilnehmenden außerdem konkret über mögliche Partnerschaften sprechen.

Für 2017 steht bereits ein Teil des „Drama-Series-Days“–Programms fest:

„CoPro Series“ 2017: Sieben internationale Serienprojekte im Pitch und auf Partnersuche

Am 15. Februar lädt der Berlinale Co-Production Market zum dritten Mal Produzent*innen, TV-Vertreter*innen, Vertriebe und weitere Serien-Finanziers zum exklusiven Serien-Pitching „CoPro Series“ ein, das in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal in der neuen Location der „Drama Series Days“ stattfindet, dem Zoo Palast.

Sieben ausgewählte Serienprojekte suchen hier Co-Produktions- und Finanzierungspartner*innen unter den Fachbesucher*innen. Darunter ist zum Beispiel Cognition, ein Crime-Thriller-Stoff des Regisseurs Alex Garcia Lopez (Misfits, Utopia), der aus Großbritannien und den USA produziert wird. Das Team der französischen Serie Trepalium (Stadt ohne Namen), die im vergangenen Jahr Aufmerksamkeit bei Kritiker*innen und beim Serienpublikum in Frankreich und Deutschland erregte, stellt seinen neuen Stoff Metro vor, ein Historienthriller aus der Zeit des ersten U-Bahn-Baus in Paris.

Im österreichisch-deutschen Crime-Projekt Freud sollen die psychoanalytischen Fähigkeiten des Titelhelden helfen, einen Serienkiller zu überführen. Außerdem wird das in Bulgarien produzierte Projekt Hausen des deutschen Autors und Regisseurs Till Kleinert vorgestellt, das die Genres Mystery, Horror und Drama in einer heruntergekommenen Hochhaussiedlung vereint.

Auch die belgische Crime-Serie Omerta, dessen Figuren sich stets auf einem schmalen Grat zwischen Vertrauen und Verrat bewegen, sucht hier Partner, ebenso wie die Dramaserie State of Happiness, in der eine norwegische Kleinstadt vom Ölboom überrascht wird.

Ein weiteres Projekt wird in Kooperation mit dem renommierten Pariser Serienfestival und Koproduktionsforum „Series Mania“ präsentiert: Aus dessen Edition 2016 wurde die Serie Warriorvon Christoffer Boe, der bisher vor allem als Spielfilmregisseur (Reconstruction; Offscreen; Sex, Drugs & Taxation) in Erscheinung getreten ist, nach Berlin eingeladen. Wie bereits in den vergangenen Jahren wird auch wieder eines der sechs anderen, bei „CoPro Series“ präsentierten Projekte im April Gelegenheit haben, bei „Series Mania“ zusätzliche Partner zu treffen.

Hauptpartner des Berlinale Co-Production Market (12. bis 15. Februar 2017) sind die MDM – Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung und Creative Europe – MEDIA, Programm der Europäischen Union.

Das Networking-Get-Together bei „CoPro Series“ im Zoo Palast findet in Kooperation mit dem Norwegischen Filminstitut statt.

EFM: 20 Serien aus aller Welt in Marktvorführungen, neues Konferenzprogramm erweitert den erfolgreichen Branchentreff der internationalen Serien-Industrie

20 neue Serien aus Argentinien, Brasilien, Deutschland, Dänemark, Frankreich, Island, Israel, Kanada, den Niederlanden, Schweden und den USA werden Einkäufer*innen von Serien vom 13. bis 15. Februar in den Marktkinos vom Zoo Palast vorgestellt. Die Themen sind divers und die Qualität der Serien ist nach wie vor hoch. Mit etablierten Marktplayern wie Global Screen, Red Arrow, Studio Canal, eOne, DR, Keshet, Lagardère, Sony TV, ITV, Dutch Features, TV Globo und Produzenten wie Vimeo und Left Bank Pictures an Bord wird den Fachbesucher*innen ein breites Spektrum an Inhalten geboten.

Zum ersten Mal findet im Zoo Palast am 13. und 14. Februar ein vielfältiges Konferenzprogramm statt, in dem die neuesten Trends und Entwicklungen – von erwarteten Genreschwankungen bis zu neuen europäischen Fördermöglichkeiten – von Fachexpert*innen vorgestellt und diskutiert werden.

„Drama Series Days“ @ Berlinale Talents

Am Montag, den 13. Februar (14:30-17:00 Uhr, HAU Hebbel am Ufer 3), wird zudem Berlinale Talents in einer ausführlichen Fallstudie die Produktionsbedingungen der Agentenserie Berlin Station mit zahlreichen Mitgliedern aus der deutschen Crew präsentieren und diskutieren. Die US-amerikanische Serie wurde letztes Jahr vollständig am Standort Berlin gedreht.

Das komplette Programm der „Drama Series Days“, inklusive aller Screenings, wird am 31. Januar veröffentlicht.

Neben den „Drama Series Days“ haben Serien auch wieder einen Platz im Festivalprogramm der Berlinale: Im Rahmen von Berlinale Special Series wird dieses Jahr wieder eine handverlesene Auswahl qualitativ hochwertiger Serien im Haus der Berliner Festspiele gezeigt.

Berlin’s location at the heart of Europe has set it historically as a hotbed of espionage, and Berlin Station, Epix’s new hit series shot entirely on location in town, casts the moody metropolis as a haven of spies. This case study provides in-depth insights into the on-set processes of production of the series. Crew members tackle moments from pre-production and challenges faced while shooting, including organizing the team, equipment, locations, scenery and time schedules. Experts of key departments discuss crafting a visual approach, lighting and set design, as well as the logistics and creative considerations of using Berlin as location. Get also a glimpse into the underlying infrastructure of the series’ digital workflows.

Hagen Bogdanski

After studying photography at the Lette Verein in Berlin, Hagen Bogdanski worked as an assistant to renowned cinematographers in Germany and abroad. He went on to work for many years with director Oskar Roehler, shooting DIE UNBERÜHRBARE (2000) and DER ALTE AFFE ANGST (2003), before achieving his international breakthrough with THE LIFE OF OTHERS (2006). Most recently, he lensed the American spy series BERLIN STATION. He is currently shooting the remake of PAPILLON.

Michael Scheel

After working as a unit manager on the film THE PRISONER OF ST. PETERSBURG in 1988, Michael Scheel became a production manager on BERLIN BREAK in 1992. Since 1998, he has also worked as a line and executive producer for film and TV productions such as BEYOND THE SEA, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, THE INTERNATIONAL, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, UNKNOWN and ALONE IN BERLIN. Most recently, he line-produced season 1 of the TV series BERLIN STATION and is currently working on season 2 as an executive producer.

Marco Bittner Rosser

Marco Bittner Rosser is an established production designer and trained architect collaborating on international feature film productions. He first worked as a set designer on an international film in 1999 in Berlin's Studio Babelsberg on Jean-Jacques Annaud’s feature ENEMY AT THE GATES. Most recently he designed the sets for the first season of the Paramount TV Series BERLIN STATION.

Charlie Woebcken

Charlie Woebcken is President/CEO of Studio Babelsberg and Managing Director of Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures. He has co-produced V FOR VENDETTA, CASINO ROYALE, THE READER, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, THE BOOK THIEF, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL and BRIDGE OF SPIES. Most recently, he co-produced THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and the TV series HOMELAND and BERLIN STATION. He previously served as Vice President of the production and distribution company TV Loonland AG and as CEO of the former Sony subsidiary Sunbow Entertainment.

Jocelyn Diaz
Jocelyn Diaz is Executive Vice President for Original Programming at EPIX, where she oversees all original development and production. Prior to this, she served as Vice President of Walt Disney Motion Picture Production and as Vice President of HBO Entertainment, Drama Series, working on such series as BOARDWALK EMPIRE and BIG LOVE. Before that she was Vice President, Primetime Drama Series and Development at ABC Television, working on award-winning series such as LOST, PUSHING DAISIES, NYPD BLUE and THE DREW CAREY SHOW.

Richard Gold
Richard Gold is a Senior Vice President of Development for Paramount Television and responsible for developing original content for the studio, whose projects include spy drama BERLIN STATION, the Emmy-winning GREASE: LIVE ON FOX, Emmy-nominated Nickelodeon hit SCHOOL OF ROCK and SHOOTER on USA. Upcoming projects include 13 REASONS WHY based on the acclaimed novel for Netflix; THE ALIENIST based on the Caleb Carr novel for TNT; and JACK RYAN based on the Tom Clancy book and movie series for Amazon.

Jan R. Martin
Jan R. Martin is a production manager based in Berlin. He has recently worked on titles such as the television series BERLIN STATION (Season 1, 2016) and the films ALONE IN BERLIN (2016) and ICH UND KAMINSKI (2016). He was previously the assistant production coordinator on INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (2009) and THE INTERNATIONAL (2009), among other productions. He is currently working as a production manager on Season 2 of BERLIN STATION.


Andrew Amondson

Andrew Amondson is an independent producer, director and creative whose work includes Emmy award-winning nonfiction series and narrative and documentary films, the most recent of which was commissioned by the Wim Wenders Foundation. He was a member of the Berlinale Talents selection committee from 2004 to 2007, responsible for developing and curating a number of special programs. Andrew is based in Berlin and Los Angeles.

Das Wichtigste scheint mir aber die Antwort von Joyselin Diaz von epix auf die Frage, wann 'Berlin Station' in Deutschland zu sehen sein wird. Da hat sich wohl gerade bei der 'Berlinale' etwas ergeben. Sie antwortete mit offensichtlicher Begeisterung: "soon, very soon".

Meine Taktik ist höflich fragen, freundlich lächeln (aber keineswegs schleimen und anbiedern), fachliches Interesse zeigen und nicht aufgeben. Klappt bei der Jagd nach meinen Location-Bildern genauso wie bei der Berlinale und überhaupt im Leben.
