Afternoon Play – The Ted Hughes Letters Monday 29 October 2.15-3.00pm BBC RADIO 4
Ted Hughes was among the last generation of serious letter writers. During his lifetime he wrote thousands – firstly to his immediate family and then, as his circle broadened, to friends, acquaintances, academics, children and fellow writers. These letters are intimate, honest and penned with beautiful prose. They are exuberant and filled with the vision and extraordinary observations of a poet as well as the detail of life.
In The Ted Hughes Letters, Richard Armitage reads a selection of letters from the first 40 years of Hughes's life, including intimate letters to his first wife Sylvia Plath, sister Olwyn and brother Gerard, tender letters to his children, Nicholas and Frieda, and honest observances to his friends such as Michael Hamburger.
Today's Afternoon Play is introduced by Jane Feaver, who came to know the poet while working for Hughes's publisher, Faber and Faber.
