Jon Bernthal and Richard Armitage quest through medieval Ireland in the upcoming film Pilgrimage.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively debuts the first images from the feature, which has just wrapped production in Europe following seven weeks of shooting in Belgium and Ireland.
The film from Brendan Muldowney centers on a group of monks who undertake a pilgrimage to transport their monastery's holiest relic to Rome. When the true significance of the relic is revealed, the journey becomes much more treacherous, and the group's faith and loyalty to one another are tested.
Bernthal (Fury, The Walking Dead) and Armitage (The Hobbit, Hannibal) star with Tom Holland, who played one of Naomi Watts' sons in The Impossible and currently is in contention for the role of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and upcoming Marvel movies.
Bernthal plays a mute brother with a violent past. Armitage portrays a misanthropic knight with whom the monks are forced to share their journey.
Holland plays the entry character of the story, a pious young novice.
Pilgrimage is an Irish production, backed by the Irish Film Board and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, with funding from Belgium's Wallimages and the Wallonia Cultural Fund. Conor Barry and John Keville of Dublin's Savage Productions produced with Benoit Roland of Belgium's Wrong Men North.
XYZ Films is executive producing and will represent the film's worldwide sales rights, co-representing the U.S. rights with WME. They'll show footage and promos to buyers at the Toronto Film Festival and the American Film Market.

First Look At Richard Armitage In The Pilgrimage
A hard day's journey for a knight (and some monks)
08 June 2015 | Written by James White | Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Cast your mind back to March, when it was reported that Richard Armitage was part of the cast for medieval thriller Pilgrimage. As the film has just wrapped, there is pictorial evidence of the man himself, alongside co-stars Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland in new stills supplied via The Hollywood Reporter.
The images – pilgrimages? We’ll get our coat – show the actors as 13th century monks who must escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome and find their faith severely tested en route when they discover that the item is not quite what they thought. And it attracts plenty of unwanted attention, which pressures them into joining forces with a knight (Armitage, who’s probably had his fill of armour for a while after the Hobbit trilogy and now this).
Bernthal plays mute member of the holy order who joined the monastery to make penance for his violent past, while Holland is a pious young novice. Brendan Muldowney called the shots on a production that ranged between Ireland and Belgium, working from a script by Jamie Hannigan. There’s no word on a release date yet, but footage from the film will be screened to potential buyers at the Toronto Film Festival and the American Film Market. We’ll take three frames! That’s how it works, right?
