Overview
Toby Jones and Richard Armitage return to the West End to star in one of Chekhov’s best-known classics, Uncle Vanya. Set in a rural country estate, the darkly funny play about family, love and power is directed by Ian Rickson.
Vanya and his niece Sonya have been looking after the family estate for years, living in solitude save for occasional visits from the local doctor, Astrov. But their quiet lives are upended when Sonya’s father, Professor Serebryakov, arrives with his glamorous (and much younger) new wife Yelena. As the urban and rural dwellers are thrust together in a tangle of unrequited love and complicated family ties, Chekhov’s unique wit and incisive dramatic voice is in full power.
Uncle Vanya premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1899. It has received innumerable revivals since, with actors including Michael Gambon and Peter Dinklage taking on the title role.
Toby Jones plays Vanya in this new production. A prolific actor of both stage and screen, his credits include the Olivier Award-winning The Play What I Wrote (2001) and Witness for the Prosecution (BBC, 2016). He previously collaborated with Ian Rickson for The Birthday Party at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2018.
Richard Armitage co-stars as Astrov. He was last seen on-stage in The Crucible at the Old Vic Theatre. On screen, he is best known as Thorin in The Hobbit film franchise, with other roles in Hannibal (2015) and Berlin Station (2016).
Further casting is yet to be announced.
Uncle Vanya is adapted by Conor McPherson (Girl From the North Country) and directed by Olivier Award nominee Ian Rickson, who most recently directed Hayley Atwell and Tom Burke in Rosmersholm (2019).
With a stellar cast breathing new life into Chekhov’s perceptive and darkly funny play, Uncle Vanya at the Harold Pinter Theatre opens for a limited run from January 2020.
