MY ZOE REVIEW
CHLOE WALKEROCTOBER 5, 2020FEATUREDFILMFILM REVIEWS
Geneticist Isabelle (Julie Delpy) and architect James (Richard Armitage) are trapped in a bitter custody battle, whilst trying to keep life as normal as possible for their young daughter Zoe (Sophia Ally). When tragedy strikes, acrimony between the parents worsens, and a fevered Isabelle goes to extraordinary, morally questionable lengths to make things right.

My Zoe – written by, directed and starring Julie Delpy – is a tricky film to review, partially because it’s really two separate films: the first hour, and then the last forty minutes. To avoid spoilers, it’s hard to talk about the last forty minutes.

The first hour is a gruelling, acrid study of a relationship turned toxic. Delpy fills My Zoe with the most agonising arguments between James and Isabelle, and they only get more so after the central tragedy. The sheer loathing in the words the divorcing couple throw back and forth, the scent of blood and something rotting in the air, make these scenes traumatising to watch. They churn your stomach. Through the lobbed invectives, we learn that Isabelle, exhausted from James’s constant spiteful possessiveness, was the one who requested the divorce. He has never forgiven her. He’s not gotten over her. Though Delpy is as raw and believable as ever here, it’s Armitage’s performance that stands out. He’s no stranger to villainous roles, but the extent of James’ cruelty, and his terrifying instability, is quite breath-taking. Armitage is mesmerising, and yet it’s a relief when he leaves the screen. You can breathe again.
For the opening two acts, My Zoe is a brutally gripping domestic drama. For the final one, it becomes… sci-fi? Kind of? Without spoiling the twists, it’s hard to explain further, but Isabelle’s career as a geneticist becomes very relevant. Whilst we’ve known about her job all along – one of the most frequent flashpoints in the many rows is James’ disregard of the importance of Isabelle’s work – the sudden turn that the film takes at this late stage still seems to come out of nowhere. As does the introduction of Daniel Brühl and Gemma Arterton’s characters.

There are plenty of interesting ideas is this final section, and Delpy’s direction is never less than polished, but because it all happens so late in the game, it’s hard to work up any investment. The first hour takes place at such a high emotional pitch, and then it rapidly falls away for that closing stretch. Enormous events happen off screen, and we’re expected to fill in the gaps. There just isn’t enough time to give these last-minute developments the narrative space they deserve; you have to wonder what Delpy could have accomplished with an extra half hour.

And so we’re left with a funny kind of filmic Frankenstein; two disparate sections, sewn together in a shape that awkwardly resembles a whole movie. There’s a lot to recommend My Zoe – uniformly strong performances (Armitage’s foremost among them), intriguing themes, a willingness on Delpy’s part to try something unexpected – yet it remains frustrating that the lack of cohesion between the two sections undoes much of the emotional weight of that bruising beginning.

★★★

My Zoe – Film Review
Dave Bond

Contains significant spoilers for My Zoe.

My Zoe is the seventh directorial effort from Julie Delpy – also the film’s lead. It tells the story of Isabelle (Delpy), a recently divorced mother of Zoe (Sophia Ally), girl for whom she shares custody with ex-husband James (Richard Armitage). With Isabelle having moved on, tentatively, to a new relationship, the finalising of custody arrangements is rancorous, subject to mediation, and laced with bitterness on both sides.

Isabelle is a geneticist, working in Berlin, where she had originally moved to support her then-husband’s career. The first act of the film establishes the discord over a painful split, the bitter debate over the details of who gets to be with Zoe and when, and the deep love both parents have for their only child; a love that is often expressed through mutual accusations of poor parenting, as neither of them can match the other’s aspirations for their daughter’s care.

Act two deals with their young daughter falling sick unexpectedly, from what appears to be an aneurism in the brain. While they sit at their daughter’s bedside, recriminations begin over what may have happened to cause the medical emergency, with Isabelle blaming James’ intransigence over access arrangements for the fact that she could not be with her daughter for much of the day she got sick.

The final act – and it really cannot be discussed without a spoiler – deals with Isabelle’s response to Zoe’s loss. With the film taking place in a near future – something only lightly hinted at with visuals of home, communication and car technology – the story is able to address ethical matters that may be on the horizon in years to come. Going to meet renowned fertility expert Thomas Fischer (Daniel Bruhl) in Moscow, Isabelle has taken a tissue sample from her late child, and will now beg the specialist to recreate that which she has lost.

First, the good. My Zoe is a well-written, superbly acted and attractively shot film that captures, magnificently, the bitterness of dying love, as well as the low-level constant worry a parent has for their child (even before the shocking events of the story play out). Dialogue is natural in a way that evokes Delpy’s work in the Before trilogy – most specifically Before Midnight, where, similarly, we were afforded an intimate look at the issues and grudges that can arise in relationships as they begin to fail.

We are shown the love between parents and daughter, and the way that love effected a distancing between the married couple, rather than draw them together. Decisions – such as relocating for a partner’s job – that were taken in good heart at the time, fester as life and career fail to turn out as expected. The first hour of the film is a fine look at the dynamics of co-parenting, a family made up from differing backgrounds, and the persistent regret that permeates our consciousness as our mistakes accumulate over a lifetime. Every performer brings their A-game, and an absolute feeling of commitment to the material.

On the more negative note, this leaves a shade over 40 minutes to cover the moral and ethical questions that have been raised in the first two acts. This could have worked as a short-run Netflix series. In a 101-minute running time, however, there is simply not enough room to for the story to breathe, once Delpy has spent so long on the relationships dramas.

When Thomas’ wife Laura (a totally wasted use of Gemma Arterton) objects to her husband’s work with Isabelle, instead of a thorough look at the ethics involved – a look at the nature of motherhood or what makes a person that person – it is glossed over in one short scene. This is two films in one, and despite no serious tonal shift, those two films don’t quite fit together in such a short running time. We are left with a languid family drama, followed by a race through a superficial ethical dilemma with sci-fi overtones.

My Zoe is simply too raw in the playing, and too authentic in the writing (or at least for the first two-thirds of the running time) for it to be unworthy of a viewing. The issues noted, along with a slightly jarring time-jump to a denouement that feels overly convenient (and raises a very specific question about James’ relationship to his daughter) leaves this as a work that doesn’t really coalesce into one solid story. In its character work, however, this is a decent work from a fine filmmaker.

My Zoe is out now on Digital HD from Signature Entertainment.

My Zoe’ Review: Julie Delpy’s Provocative Family Drama
The characters can be confoundingly self-involved, but Delpy finds unusual threads to pull you closer to them and their crises.

The French filmmaker Julie Delpy is still best known as an actor, but she’s been building a varied and impressive filmography as a feature writer and a director since the early part of the century. Her new picture, “My Zoe,” in which she also stars, is an unusually compelling domestic drama with sharp ears, a sharp eye, and up to a point, sharp teeth.

Delpy plays Isabelle, a geneticist living in Berlin with her young and adorable daughter Zoe. Her ex-husband, James (Richard Armitage), seems a perpetual and arbitrary thorn in her side, constantly needling her about visitation days and the competence of babysitters. The bickering doesn’t stop when disaster strikes. While their daughter has surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain caused by an aneurysm, Isabelle and James argue about their married sex life.
Sounds like something to be appalled by. But Delpy writes these characters with such depth, and stages their interactions with such sensitivity, that you understand them without necessarily approving of them.

The movie takes a likely unexpected turn from the conventional bad marriage story. Isabelle travels to Russia, appealing to a controversial medical researcher, Thomas Fischer (the frequent Delpy collaborator Daniel Bruhl), for a radical solution to a family tragedy.

For nonspoiler purposes, let’s call that solution “the shiny object” — a project of dubious ethics, and little probability of succeeding, that nevertheless proves irresistible to all who contemplate it. As it happens, it proves irresistible to filmmaker Delpy as well. It’s in her embrace of it that the movie, so tart and assured up to a certain point, goes wrong. But Delpy is a sufficiently assertive cinematic voice that she’s well worth arguing — and maybe ultimately disagreeing — with.

My Zoe
Rated R for language and themes. Running time: Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes. In theaters. Please consult the guidelines outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before watching movies inside theaters.

Danke!
