13 actors you never knew were in Star Wars movies, from Rose Byrne to Brian Blessed

Dominic West, what on earth are you wearing?
By Matt Hill and Ali Plumb

Film fans around the world are rewatching the old Star Wars movies to prepare for The Force Awakens, and there are more than a few surprises in store.

Putting Jar Jar's unabashed Jar Jar-iness to one side, some of the biggest "What the!?" moments are when you recognise now-famous actors, all young and eager, gurning for the camera in the prequels trilogy.

Here, then, are some of our favourite "Is that who I think it is...!?" actors from the sci-fi saga, concentrating on Episodes I-III, but with a couple of original trilogy gems thrown in for good measure.

1. DOMINIC WEST

Character: Naboo palace guard Jerus Jannick

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Playing Jimmy McNulty in HBO's The Wire, though his recent turn in The Affair has won him a lot of critical praise.

2. RICHARD ARMITAGE

Character: Unnamed Naboo Bravo 6 starfighter pilot

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Looking fantastic in a pleated beard as Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the dwarves in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy.

3. ROSE BYRNE

Character: Queen Amidala's handmaiden Dormé

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Being the big bad in Bridesmaids, as well as less well-known roles in Troy, 28 Weeks Later, Insidious, X-Men: First Class, Bad Neighbours and Spy.

4. BRIAN BLESSED

Character: Rogur Nass

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: "GORDON'S ALIVE!" That is to say, Flash Gordon and shouting a lot.

5. GREG PROOPS

Character: Fode, one of the two commentating heads at the pod race

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Sitting, standing or leaning in Whose Line Is It Anyway?

6. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY

Character: Queen Amidala's handmaiden (and decoy, see above) Sabé

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Pirates of the Caribbean and a variety of corseted period roles. Also, indie rom-coms and Bend It Like Beckham.

7. SOFIA COPPOLA

Character: Queen Amidala's handmaiden Saché

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Directing arthouse fare such as Lost In Translation, as well as being the daughter of legendary director, producer and screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola.

8. JOEL EDGERTON

Character: Young Owen Lars

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Playing Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and beating seven bells out of Tom Hardy in Warrior, as well as his directorial debut, psychological thriller The Gift, which came out this year.

9. TERENCE STAMP

Character: Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Getting you to kneel before him as General Zod in Superman II (1980).

10. CELIA IMRIE

Character: Bravo Five pilot Dineé Ellberger

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Dinnerladies, let's be honest. Yes, there are the Bridget Jones movies, as well the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies, the St Trinian's movies and, um, Highlander... but it's all about the Dinnerladies, really.

11. JULIAN GLOVER

Character: General Maximilian Veers

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Game of Thrones's Grand Maester Pycelle. You remember him! White beard, disparaging tone. Him.

12. PETER SERAFINOWICZ

Character: Darth Maul (voice)

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Best known outside of Star Wars for: His sketch show, The Peter Serafinowicz Show (where Brian Butterfield was born), as well as his top-drawer grunting as Pete in Shaun Of The Dead.

13. JOHN RATZENBERGER

Character: Major Bren Derlin

Appeared in: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Best known outside of Star Wars for: Playing good ol' Cliffie in Cheers, as well as becoming the voice acting mascot for Pixar, appearing in every film the animation studio has made so far.
