Romeo and Juliet: a new audiobook original with Richard Armitage
As I’ve said a few times over the last couple of months I never talk about future projects until they’re announced and have a launch date. Well now here’s one I can speak about. I’m returning to adapting Shakespeare as an original audiobook for Audible, and delighted to say I’ll be venturing onto the aural stage again with the immense talents of Richard Armitage as the narrator. After Hamlet, Prince of Denmark it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing the job.
The subject this time is Romeo and Juliet. It calls upon Shakespeare’s version and the earlier Italian tales which inspired him. The audiobook will be out on December 6 but you can pre-order now. Closer to the time I’ll be talking more about the project and once it’s out releasing some background material. I met up with Richard when he started on the narration in London a few weeks back and I have to say… I sat back in awe as he brought the story to life. This is one of the most exciting projects I’ve ever undertaken.
As with Hamlet and Macbeth this is not a plain copy of the Shakespeare original but a reimagining of Shakespeare and his sources told in modern English, with twists you will not get in the play. Unlike Shakespeare too it’s set in the very real city of Verona where I was happy to research the locations and background, and set in a specific year, the summer of 1499. It’s a long wait until December but I hope it will be worth it.

Leider noch nicht im deutschen Audible, aber ich kann ja warten, dauert bestimmt nicht mehr so lange. Und ich habe noch drei Hörbücher mit Benedict Cumberbatch und Ralf Bauer vor mir.
Mit so einer im Ohr geht ein Workout auf dem Crosstrainer oder mit den Nordic Walking-Stöcken viel besser von Hand.

Dann bin ich ja nicht die Einzige, die sich noch durch DC beisst. Den zweiten Teil habe ich fast geschafft. Aber trotz der werde ich mit Dickens nicht richtig warm. Vielleicht kommt es ja noch...

Das klingt wirklich viel verspechend. Und wenn David Hewson sich durch den gesamten Shakespeare "durchadaptiert", dann können wir ja noch so einiges erwarten. Danke für die Infos, Nimue. (Kommt da noch etwas anderes oder lagen wir mit der Vermutung von etwas Sachbuchartigem völlig falsch? )

In letzter Zeit standen ja auch drei Geburtstage (meine Schwestern und ich) und eine Hochzeit (meine Cousine hat gestern geheiratet) an und irgendwie muss ich ja die zusätzlichen Kalorien abarbeiten.

Bin auch noch nicht fertig...habe jetzt ca. 2/3 und schon eine längere Pause gemacht.
Dabei gefällt mir DC richtig gut und Richard macht das fantastisch, aber ich habe sowenig Zeit und vor allem Geduld, Hörbücher zu hören...

Romeo and Juliet, narrated by Richard Armitage, will go live on Audible worldwide on December 6. But we’ve a few goodies to offer you before then. The first is the chance to win the audiobook for free the moment it comes out. But you will have to work for it, and learn a little about the coming book along the way.
This isn’t a photocopy of Shakespeare any more than Shakespeare was a faithful imitation of the sources he used for his own version of the story. I’ve set my version very deliberately in a specific year, 1499, and spent time in Verona to locate the story at specific places and incorporate a few cultural and social issues of the era into the narrative.
Every Saturday from today until November 26 we’ll be putting up a small puzzle here covering one of these aspects of the story. You should be able to find the answers with a little detective work on the web (or even in posts here) then, when we launch, see how they’re used in the audiobook. All you need to do is keep a note of the answers then send them to an address we’ll give you on November 26. There are five free copies of the audiobook up for grabs. We’ll announce the winners on December 1, so if you’ve pre-ordered the book already you can still cancel and get your money or credits back.

When we first meet Juliet she’s just returned from a trip to Venice with her parents. No, you won’t find this in Shakespeare or any of his sources. This is an imaginative adaptation so expect new material, twists and changes.
While in Venice Juliet has been introduced to the mythical Saint Ursula through a cycle of nine paintings exhibited there telling her story through to her martyrdom. They were unveiled just a short time before and were, for their time, almost a medieval iMax movie (and still are today).

Da hätte ich aber gerne die Auflösung sogleich, damit ich meinen spärlichen Horizont in Sachen Mittelalter erweitern kann

In Sachen Mittelalter kann Dir gern geholfen werden. Und was die Heilige Ursula anbetrifft, so möchte ich neben Venedig einfach mal auf Köln verweisen.
