XYZ Films has come on as executive producer and worldwide sales agent for Brendan Muldowney’s new action-thriller ‘Pilgriamge’, a co-production between Ireland and Belgium.
Muldowney’s credits include ‘Savage’ and ‘Love Eternal’. He will shoot ‘Pilgrimage’ from a screenplay by Jamie Hannigan. The film is scheduled to commence its seven-week shoot on the west coast of Ireland and the Ardennes region of Belgium in April 2015.
The story follows a band of 13th century monks on a perilous journey to escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome.
The feature will be produced by Conor Barry and John Keville of Dublin-based Savage Productions and Benoit Roland of Wrong Men North.
“XYZ is thrilled to play a part in bringing ‘Pilgrimage’ to life,” said XYZ partner Aram Tertzakian. “It’s a masterful character study of peaceful individuals forced into tense and often barbaric situations. The result is a gripping thriller that offers a glimpse into mankind’s violent past while raising important questions about the role of faith in our world today.”
Producer Conor Barry said: “Savage Productions are incredibly excited to bring together the richly detailed originality and intelligence of Jamie Hannigan’s script with the unique approach that director Brendan Muldowney brings to genre.
“Ireland at the edge of the world in 1209, with all its brutality and conflict, promises a wild and action-packed adventure that pulls no punches.”
‘Pilgrimage’ was developed with the assistance of the Irish Film Board and will be financed by the Irish Film Board, the Broadcasting Authority Of Ireland, Wallimages and the Wallonia Cultural Fund.
Muldowney’s previous film ‘Savage’ was an IFTA winner while ‘Love Eternal’, which was out in Irish cinemas earlier this year, won the Dublin Film Critics Circle Best Irish Feature Award at JDIFF as well the inaugural Fresh Blood Award at the Black Bear Film Fest in Warsaw. The film screened at over 60 festivals including the Galway Film Fleadh, the Dingle Film Festival, Sitges, Busan and Berlinale.

SYNOPSIS
Ireland, 1209. An island on the edge of the world.
A small group of monks begin a reluctant pilgrimage across an island torn between centuries of tribal warfare and the growing power of Norman invaders.
Escorting their monastery's holiest relic - a rock used in the martyrdom of St. Mathias, the thirteenth apostle - to Rome, the monks' progress is seen through the eyes of a pious young novice and a mute lay-brother with a violent past.
As the true material, political and religious significance of the bejewelled relic becomes dangerously apparent, their path to the east coast becomes increasingly fraught with danger.
The monks belatedly realise that in this wild land of ancient superstitions, the faith that binds them together may ultimately lead to their destruction
