There is also much excitement about a remake of romantic 18th-century melodrama Poldark (Richard Armitage is tipped to play the lead), as well as a shameless compendium of crowd-pleasing Victoriana in Dickensian, a remix of the 19th-century author's work in which his most famous characters from different novels cross paths.

Richard Armitage as Poldark: A pipe dream?

Some time back, when we were all casting around for suitable new roles for Richard Armitage to move on to, a number of people, including me, gave a heartfelt mention to the part of Ross Poldark, the hero of the Poldark novels by Winston Graham, and soon to be TV remake. I found out which British production company was making the 8 part series, (Mammoth Screen- makers of Parade’s Rest and Endeavour) and kept an eye on their twitter feed for any announcements.

The Poldark Appreciation Society had already polled their members, and come up with Richard Armitage as their ‘Ross’ of choice, but of course that was just wishful thinking on their part, and for many months there were no updates of any kind to indicate casting choices. Anyone who’s read the books or seen the original series could acknowledge that RA has the right dashing, heroic qualities, but was he in line for the part, or even wanting to take on another costume drama?

I’ve just uncovered a couple of reports of auditions (here and here) taking place today at Truro in Cornwall for young actresses who look 17-20 years of age to play the young heroine, Demelza. Reluctantly and sadly I’m letting go of my fond dream- a 42 year old actor playing hero to a teenage heroine?- I don’t think so.

Of course none of this gelled anyway with reports of RA being seen in Los Angeles, and all indications point to him pursuing acting roles in America, not in Britain. I’ll still be keeping an eye out for the cast list, and I’ll still be interested to watch the remake of a much-loved TV series from my teenage years, but I fear it won’t have my favourite leading man at the top of the billing.

Poldark: Will a Cornish teenage actress play Demelza in new TV series?

YOUNG Cornish actresses will be hoping they shine in auditions in Truro today (Saturday) for a new TV series of Poldark.

A shortlist of applicants has already been drawn up by the production company to play the role of Demelza.

A casting agent advertised at colleges, drama groups and local theatre companies.

And today, the budding actresses, all aged between 17 and 20 and from the county, will have the chance to perform at a location in town.

Based on videos of the day, TV bosses back in London will decide in the coming weeks if any are suitable for the role.

Demelza is described as “strikingly beautiful” and features in every episode of the new series.

She plays a servant who catches the eye of the hero of the story, Ross Poldark.

The actress must have dark hair or be willing to have her hair dyed and also can not be in full-time education due to the demands of filming.

Poldark will be shot at locations in Cornwall later this year, as well as at studios in Bristol.

Susie Parriss is looking for a Cornish actress to play one of the leading roles of DEMELZA in a new BBC series of Poldark. Auditions in Truro today and tomorrow!

Ich würde Poldark für RA jetzt noch nicht abschreiben, zumindest nicht bis wir entgültig wissen wer die Rolle denn nun spielen wird.

Richard meinte doch, dass er sich alle Türen offen hält und sollte ihn die Produktion reizen, würde er sich bestimmt nicht davon abhalten lassen, nur weil es eine britische Produktion ist. Aber gut, wir werden sehen.

Ich bin jedenfalls auch froh, dass es endlich wieder Neuigkeiten zu 'Poldark' gibt.
