BBC One announces Aidan Turner to star as Poldark in new series


BBC One today reveals Aidan Turner (The Hobbit Trilogy, Being Human) will star as Ross Poldark in Debbie Horsfield’s adaptation of Winston Graham’s acclaimed saga set in 18th century Cornwall, made by Mammoth Screen and directed by Ed Bazalgette (The Guilty, Endeavour).

Britain is in the grip of a chilling recession... falling wages, rising prices, civil unrest - only the bankers are smiling. It's 1783 and Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin. But Ross finds that hope and love can be found when you are least expecting it in the wild but beautiful Cornish landscape.

Aidan Turner says: "I'm very excited to play Ross Poldark for the BBC and it's obviously a huge challenge to honour the extraordinary character Winston Graham created and who Debbie Horsfield has brought new life to. But there's a terrific team coming together and the scripts are superb, so I can't wait to get started."

A man of contradictions, Ross has a strong sense of social justice but a contempt for authority. He’s a man of principle yet frequently a rebel. Reckless yet full of integrity. Charismatic but down-to-earth. Volatile yet fiercely loyal. Torn between two women and two social classes. A hero to most, a scourge to many.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, says: "We are really excited. He is a brilliant actor, he is part of the BBC family, we are incredibly thrilled he is coming back from Hollywood from The Hobbit in order to lead Poldark for BBC One."

Damien Timmer, executive producer for Mammoth Screen, adds: “Ross Poldark is an iconic role - we needed an actor with the right combination of striking looks, youthful rebelliousness, emotional complexity and maturity of presence which hints at the man he becomes across the saga. In our minds there was only one candidate. Happily he said yes!”

Andrew Graham, author Winston Graham’s son, adds: “I am delighted at the choice of Aidan Turner as Ross, as I am sure my father would have been. Ross in the novels was a man of dark good looks, impulsive temperament, strong loyalties and deep emotions. I am greatly looking forward to seeing Aidan bring all these qualities freshly to life.”

Poldark is an 8x60-minutes series, adapted by Debbie Horsfield and made by Mammoth Screen for BBC One. It is produced by Eliza Mellor and the executive producers are Debbie Horsfield, Rebecca Keane, Karen Thrussell and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen and Polly Hill, Head of Independent Drama, for the BBC.

Filming begins in Cornwall and Bristol in April 2014 and the series will transmit in 2015 on BBC One.

Further casting will be announced in due course.

Ich gönne es AT auch. Und ich bin generell gespannt auf die Verfilmung. Die BBC produziert ja (zumindest für meinem Geschmack) meist sehr gute Serien/Filme.

Ich muss aber gestehen, dass ich Richard wirklich dort gerne, in diese Rolle, in diesen Genre gesehen hätte

naja, wer weiß was wir in den nächsten Jahren noch für tolle Serien oder Filme mit Richard sehen werden

Wenn ich ehrlich bin, so wünsche ich mir für Richard eigentlich auch kein Remake, welcher Art auch immer, sondern eine Erstverfilmung, bei der seine schauspielerische Leistung an sich bewertet wird und nicht von vornherein ein vergleichender Blick vorherrscht.

Das wünsche ich mir/ihm auch!

Mit AT hätte ich wahrlich nicht gerechnet, ist aber okay. Die Zwerg/Elb-"Romanze" hat mich zwar eher zum lachen als zum schwärmen gebracht, aber vielleicht gelingt AT das besser, wenn er einen Menschen spielt.

Poldark: Aidan Turner has big shoes to fill
Aidan Turner will play Ross Poldark in a re-make of the Seventies hit TV show but he has a big task because Robin Ellis and original cast created a show that is an object of veneration

The news that Aidan Turner has signed on to play the lead in a new BBC One remake of Poldark makes it official: the Seventies are back among us.

The fashion for beards will now be followed by one for skin-tight breeches, heaving bosoms and sideburns that look as if they can act a scene on their own.

Poldark fans – and they are legion since the original 29-part series was sold in 40 countries and on DVD is the most popular costume drama after Pride and Prejudice – had been hoping that a different dwarf from The Hobbit would be chosen to play Ross Poldark.

Early money was riding on Richard Armitage to embody the dashing soldier with a scar and a limp who returns from the American War of Independence to find his home in ruins and his fiancée in another man’s arms. But the BBC has plumped for Turner, another smouldering, designer-stubbled type who first found fame in Being Human, to take him on.

He has big shoes to fill. The original Ross, Robin Ellis, now a chef specialising in diabetic recipes, told BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live that he recently witnessed a woman falling in the street. When he rushed to her aid, she looked him in the eye and said: “But you . . . are. . . . Ross . . . Poldark.” Since this is 40 years after the show screened and took place in France, the country where he now lives and one of the few where Poldark has never been shown, it reveals the strength of its tentacles and the affection in which the series was once held.

But if for one generation Poldark is an object of veneration, for two more its status is mysterious. So here are the facts. The TV series was based on the equally popular sequence of novels by Winston Graham, of which the first seven formed the basis for the 29 parts screened in two series on BBC One in 1975 and 1977. (A later revival on ITV was much less popular.)

The easiest, though laziest, way to describe the show is Downton Abbey with bodices, bosoms and flooded tin mines. But it was more than that. Shot in Cornwall, where it was set, and, according to Ellis, mainly filmed in real time as if it was a piece of theatre, it had a cracking story about Ross’s return, his obsession with his lost love, his fight against the evil George Warleggan and his affair with his nit-ridden serving wench Demelza whom he eventually marries.


The first episode wasn’t much of a success. Clive James memorably pointed out in a one line dismissal that Poldark was an anagram of Old Krap. But by its conclusion, 15 million were glued to their sets. Part of the success was thanks to the sweepingly beautiful Cornish landscapes, the rolling waves, the sheer cliffs. Part too was down to the emotive theme tune by Kenyon Emrys Roberts, complete with angelic choir.

But most of all, the trick of Poldark was the way its actors made the unfamiliar period and costumes seem like second skins, and allowed fans to concentrate on the roiling emotions rather than the props surrounding them. In particular, Ellis managed to wear a leather coat and skin-tight trousers without ever losing sight of the damaged man inside them.

As the rogueish Demelza, Angharad Rees stole hearts so decisively that a certain group of men campaigned up until her sadly early death two years ago for her to return to the part. Though other actors such as Ralph Bates as the villianous George Warleggan, Jill Townsend as Ross’s true love Elizabeth and even Christopher Biggins (yes, him) as a tricky parson played their part in the popularity of the series, it was the sexiness and power of that central couple that attracted viewers.

That’s the thing about Poldark. My parents’ generation, with just three channels to chose from, felt it ate into the soul just as fiercely as the waves hitting the Cornish sand. How it will play in a multi-channel world which is used to costume drama and has the hi-jinks of Game of Thrones at its disposal is anyone’s guess. But it should be fun finding out.
