Entertainment company Disney has confirmed filming for the sequel to Hollywood’s latest adaptation of Alice in Wonderland took place in East Horsley last week.
Rumours circulated on Twitter that Johnny Depp was on location at Horsley Park, but that has not been backed-up by either Disney or De Vere Venues – which runs the conference venue and meeting room complex.
The Victorian Gothic estate was built in 1834 by Charles Barry, architect of the Palace of Westminster. It is noted for its tower and colourful chapel.
Principal photography for James Bobin’s adaptation of Alice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass began at Shepperton Studios at the beginning of the month and the film is slated for release on May 27 2016.
The all-star ensemble cast includes Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska – as Alice – Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans.
The film revisits Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland – and back in Time.
The filming location represents something of a homecoming for Alice. In August 1868, a youthful Carroll – real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson – visited Guildford for the first time, aged 36, on a house-hunting expedition. He had published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland three years earlier.
In 1868 he bought The Chestnuts, a home for his six unmarried sisters, in Guildford, next to the castle ruins.
It was on one of his visits there that he wrote the second Alice book, Through the Looking Glass, in 1871.
A spokesman for Disney said: “Filming took place for one night last week at Horsley Park. I am afraid I cannot discuss details of the scene that was filmed.”
The literary version of Through the Looking Glass is set six months later than the earlier book. It sees Alice enter a fantastical land again, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it.
The voices of Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman also feature in the movie.
Surrey has attracted many directors and producers of both TV shows and big-budget Hollywood movies over the years, including the cast and crew of Avengers: Age of Ultron, 24: Live Another Day, and Brad Pitt's World War Z.
This week, a film set was erected at Obelisk Pond in Virginia Water as part of filming rumoured to be for the new Tarzan film.
