In addition, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug cracked the top five for the first time as it slowly but steadily moves up the chart. The second Hobbit movie was up three positions to #4 ahead of Thor: The Dark World. It still has some work ahead of it to catch the top three though.

Deshalb freuen wir uns drauf: In unserer Top-100-Jahresvorschau 2012 landete Peter Jacksons erster Teil seiner "Der Herr der Ringe"-Vorgeschichte auf Platz eins. Auch der Vertrauensvorschuss von FILMSTARTS an den Zeremonienmeister von Mittelerde war und ist fast grenzenlos. Nachdem "Der Hobbit: Eine unerwartete Reise" hinter den hohen Erwartungen zurückblieb, langt es dieses Jahr zwar nicht für den Spitzenplatz, aber dennoch sind wir davon überzeugt, dass "The Desolation Of Smaug" besser wird als "Eine unerwartete Reise" und sich vielleicht sogar in die Nähe des Niveaus der Ursprungs-Trilogie bewegt.

He and the elf Tauriel bring a little romantic relief to The Desolation of Smaug and, in the final film, Kili’s character is developed further as Richard Armitage (who plays Thorin Oakenshield) explains,

“In the third film we [Thorin and Kili] had some really kind of sensitive, intimate moments. He’s [Kili] such a heroic character in the first movie and his journey is fascinating and he goes through all sorts of traumas, so it was a real privilege to play that with him [Aidan] and he really gave himself up to it.”

The Blu-ray release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey won't just be a chance to see many, many hours of behind-the-scenes footage from the production of the massive movie. It will also be your first look at the next installment of the trilogy. Announcing the March 12 arrival of The Hobbit on Digital Download, plus a Blu-ray and DVD release a week later, Warner Bros. revealed that Peter Jackson will be hosting a live event first fans to get a first look at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

To participate in the event, happening on Sunday, March 24 at 3 pm EST, you'll need the UltraViolet code that comes with the purchase of a 3D Blu-ray or regular Blu-ray or DVD. There will also be an edited version of the footage archived on the site for fans to access, but it's unclear if the preview will ever be released to general audiences. Theoretically the website thehobbit.com/sneak is supposed to provide more information, but at the time we wrote this the link was dead.

The Desolation of Smaug, the second of what will now be three Hobbit films, is set to come to theaters on December 13, and among other exciting things will be the first reveal of the dragon Smaug, played using motion-capture by Benedict Cumberbatch.
