Hannibal Spoilers: Richard Armitage talks his first appearence & honouring the books

July 26th, 2015 by Sarah Jones

Last night’s Hannibal saw the show skip forward three years, with Hannibal locked up avoiding the death penalty, being deemed insane. While Will had begun a new life for himself with Molly and her son, until Jack came along hoping for his help with ‘The Tooth Fairy’.

This of course saw the show begin the Red Dragon story from the Thomas Harris books, with Richard Armitage brilliantly portraying deranged killer Francis Dolarhyde. As Will got back into the swing of things at the FBI, he eventually went to see Hannibal once again.

In mark of his long awaited debut on the show, Armitage spoke to TVLine about his epic first appearence and what fans can expect over the thrilling episodes to come.

“Obviously, I read the book, and he’s described as a bodybuilder. So, before I got up to Toronto, I was in the gym doing intense workout sessions, since we needed to fill him out in the way that Harris wanted.” He began.

While he further went on to explain how he discovered ‘Butoh’ when finding a theatrical sense to his role, which is a form of Japanese expression, the actor explained.

He also spoke about the creepy scene, where viewers see Dolarhyde covered in blood in the snow after one of his kills. Armitage recalled how it was a freezing cold night, but they used sugar blood and heated it up. It’s safe to say there was very little post production in that scene.

Fans will have noted that Dolarhyde had no dialogue in the first episode, despite making a huge impression on viewers. The actor explained to The Hollywood Reporter how he studied online speech therapies for speech disabilities. Pointing out how his character has a self conscious approach to his voice.

Not only will we hear him speak in episode 9, we’ll learn just how Hannibal is his idol too but also a pawn in his games with Will.

Did you enjoy Armitage’s debut? Tell us below….
