VibeSpotlight: Richard Armitage
The Vibe Wednesday, March 11 2015

The man with the booming voice, the reclaimer of the Lonely Mountain, the convicted warlock - as one of this year's Olivier nominees for Best Actor, Richard Armitage is finally getting the appreciation he deserves.

No, we don’t mean the other Richard Armitage, the former US Deputy Secretary of State, who blabbed about the identity of a CIA agent to Washington Post. We mean the good one.

To film fans, Armitage is probably best known for playing Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarven company set to reclaim the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit trilogy.

As far as theatre fans are concerned – he is John Proctor in last year’s incredible production of The Crucible. Widely regarded as one of the best takes on the role, it was his powerful performance at the witch trials that gave Armitage his Olivier nomination.

In either case, Armitage is your go-to guy for dark, tall, handsome and brooding characters.

Leicester-born, the young Richard convinced his mother to transfer him to the drama-oriented Pattison’s College. Pattison’s education gave Armitage the discipline of a professional actor.

As a child, he was a bit of a bookworm and a fan of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. When we say fan, we mean absolute Tolkien nerd.

Ironically, he once played an elf in a stage production of The Hobbit. I bet his company would be surprised to learn that one.

When he was 17, Armitage went to some great lengths to get his Equity card. Namely, he went to work at a circus in Budapest, performing at a show called Allow London and doing… well a whole bunch of weird stuff. Got him his Equity card, though, which was (and still kinda is), a must for anyone who wants to really succeed in acting.

He worked as an assistant choreographer afterwards, saving enough money to get into London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

After graduating, he went on into the professional world, appearing in RSC’s Macbeth.

Major success came to him when he appeared as a main character in BBC’s North and South, playing the mill-owner John Thornton. The role was met with incredible acclaim from fans and critics alike. His newfound fans literally crashed BBC’s message boards with praise.

Richard was pretty surprised by his own success.

That was also the time when his fanbase, the Armitage Army, began to form.

He went on to star in other TV shows: The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Malice Aforethought, The Golden Hour.

His first film role was at around that time – he had a part in Frozen. No, not that Frozen. The English indie film one. That Frozen wouldn’t happen for eight more years, you muppet.

He starred in Shakespeare Re-Told, along with his now rival for the Best Actor bronze, James McAvoy.

He then got another career boost in 2006, starring in Robin Hood as Sir Guy of Gisborne. Though he played a villain, he played really, really well. So well in fact, he had a bit of a “Draco in Leather Pants” effect. The public loved him.

There’s still action figures of him out there, it’s amazing.

He then starred in Spooks for a long time, before returning to stage for a bit.

In 2010, he was cast in his most high-profile role to date – that of Thorin Oakenshield in the first The Hobbit film.

The film series brought him international recognition as an actor and pretty much solidified his “troubled, dark hero” type.

Fortunately, I must say because I can’t imagine anyone else playing John Proctor in The Crucible. We went to a screening of the play not so long ago and my review of it is… well, just read it. (http://bit.ly/1ChhEla)

Other than his film and stage acting work, he is a recognised voice actor, with many audio books and two Audie Awards nominations behind him.

That’s hardly a surprise – Armitage is well-renowned for his booming baritone, which always adds a whole new layer of drama to his characters.

Armitage skirts the line of a method actor, though he himself won’t say he is. Much of the dark, antihero tendencies his characters have is due to his own preference for this sort of characters. He writes his own character diaries and concentrates on character development to get into the role.

Olivier Awards 2015

As one of the four nominees for Best Actor this year, Richard Armitage is now at the peak of his career. We were absolutely enamoured by his performance in The Hobbit and The Crucible. His competition is strong – his baritone is up against James McAvoy’s sexy Scottish accent, and even then he’s got Mark Strong’s amazing performance in A View From the Bridge and Tim Piggott-Smith’s in King Charles III to get past.

Ja, es liest sich wirklich schön. :heartthrow:

Nur mit etwas bin ich nicht ganz einverstanden "Richard Armitage is now at the peak of his career"... ich glaube ja das sein Gipfel noch lange nicht erreicht ist! :irre:

Danke Laudine :kuss:
