They Disappeared by Joy Ellis audiobook review — a perfect combination
The latest fenland thriller is the seventh outing for detective duo Rowan Jackman and Marie Evans
Think Thorin Oakenshield. Because you will have his rich baritone in your head as you enjoy listening to They Disappeared. Joy Ellis’s latest fenland thriller is narrated by the versatile Richard Armitage, who played the dwarf warrior in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Hobbit.
Techno-whizz Orac, with her spiky ash-blonde GI cut and mirror specs, absconds from her IT empire in the basement of Saltern-le-Fen police station just when her colleagues need her most. Someone is targeting urban explorers, the daring young folk who make their way into derelict structures and record their extraordinary findings on camera and video (check out Wiki if you, like me, knew nothing of this perilous new global pastime). Establishing who explored where with whom becomes increasingly critical as the body count rises. But where is Orac? And is she too in danger? They Disappeared is the seventh outing for detectives Rowan Jackman (steady and perceptive) and Marie Evans (astute and athletic).
The setting is Ellis’s heartland, the haunting shores and lonely villages of the Lincolnshire Fens, which she conjures up with an immediacy born of deep understanding: Ellis lives in the Fens with her partner, whose former career in the police usefully informs the procedural side of her books. Her socially topical plotlines are made the more dramatic as she wastes no time on purple passages, is frugal on adverbs and strong on dialogue, something that Armitage evidently relishes. They Disappeared by Joy Ellis, read by Richard Armitage, Audible, 10hr 14min, £18.99
